Large Magellanic Cloud-1.jpgThe Large Cloud of Magellan (HR)60 visiteAn alluring sight in dark Southern skies, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is seen here through a narrow filter that transmits only the red light of Hydrogen Atoms. Ionized by energetic starlight, a Hydrogen Atom emits the characteristic red H-alpha light as its single electron is recaptured and transitions to lower energy states. As a result, this image of the LMC seems covered with shell-shaped clouds of Hydrogen gas surrounding massive, young stars. Sculpted by the strong stellar winds and ultraviolet radiation, the glowing Hydrogen clouds are known as "H-II" (such as Ionized Hydrogen) Regions. This HR mosaic view was recorded in 6 segments, each with 200 minutes of exposure time. Itself composed of many overlapping shells, the Tarantula Nebula, is the large star forming Region near top center. A satellite of our Milky Way Galaxy, the LMC is about 15,000 light-years across and lies a mere 180.000 LY away in the constellation known as Dorado.

Skylab-1973.jpgThe "unforgettable" Skylab...82 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day", del 29 Aprile 2006:"Skylab was an orbiting laboratory launched by NASA in May 1973. Skylab, pictured above, was visited 3 times by NASA Astronauts who sometimes stayed as long as two and a half months. Many scientific tests were performed on Skylab, including astronomical observations in ultraviolet and X-ray light. Some of these observations yielded valuable information about Comet Kohoutek, our Sun and about the mysterious X-ray Background Radiation that (apparently) comes from all over the sky.
Skylab fell back to Earth on July, 11, 1979".

Un po' come il frutto della conoscenza nel giardino di Dio, unico fra tutti a non essere stato concesso e ad essere agognato, anche a prezzo della morte..."

Progenitor hypotheses include the winds from bright Orion stars and the supernovas of stars long gone. Barnard's Loop is too faint to be identified with the unaided eye. The nebula was discovered only in 1895 by E. E. Barnard on long duration film exposures. The above image was taken in a single specific color emitted by hydrogen to bring out detail. To the left of the Horsehead Nebula, visible as the small dark indentation near the image top, is the photogenic Flame Nebula".

Caption originale: This artist's concept depicts a type of dead star called pulsar and the surrounding disk of rubble discovered by NASA's SST. The pulsar, called 4U 0142+61, was once a massive star until about 100.000 years ago when it blew up in a supernova explosion and scattered dusty debris into space. Some of that debris was captured into what astronomers refer to as a "fallback disk", now circling the remaining stellar core, or pulsar. The disk resembles protoplanetary disks around young stars, out of which planets are thought to be born.
Supernovas are a source of Iron, Nitrogen and other heavy metals in the universe. They spray these elements out into space, where they eventually come together in clouds that give rise to new stars and planets. The Spitzer finding demonstrates that supernovas might also contribute heavy metals to their own planets, a possibility that was first suggested when astronomers discovered planets circling a pulsar called PSR B1257+12 in 1992.
