South Polar Halo.jpgSouth Polar Halo62 visiteWhen Sunlight reflects and refracts off of tiny ice crystals in the atmosphere, the result can be ice crystal halos, which are related to rainbows (the latter being produced when Sunlight reflects and refracts from water droplets).
In Antarctica the temperatures are cold and the air is dry, so snow crystals grow very slowly. This slow growth tends to produce very clean hexagonal prisms, which are well suited for producing beautiful atmospheric displays. The example here is a South Pole halo, showing a rich variety of arcs and halos.
Halos arise from the way minute ice crystals in the atmosphere scatter Sunlight (or Moonlight!) into different angles.
The quality of a halo depends on the type and quality of the ice crystals that produce it.

Con oggi (2 Febbraio 2006) iniziamo a vedere qualcosa che, sebbene faccia ormai parte della Storia e non più dell'attualità, non potrà non stupire, sorprendere e meravigliare: l'Agenzia Spaziale Sovietica, sin dai primi Anni '60, era già estremamente evoluta (ben più della NASA), ma una impressionante serie di rovesci (alcuni dei quali così assurdi da far pensare al sabotaggio più che alla sfortuna...), unita ad una propaganda rivolta al "silenzio" e non alla "pubblicizzazione", la portarono a recitare, negli anni a venire, un mero ruolo di comprimaria nell'Avventura Spaziale.

Astronomers detected an Extrasolar Planet that is five times as massive as Earth, circling a red dwarf - such as a relatively cool star - every 10 years. The distance between this Planet, designated OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, and its host is about 3 times greater than that between the Earth and the Sun (means about 240/250 MKM).
The Planet's large orbit and its dim parent star probably make its surface temperature a frigid -364° Fahrenheit (about -220° Celsius).

D-RAD.jpgDeinococcus Radiodurans: the "Terra-Farmers"...78 visiteThese bacteria could survive on another planet. In an Earth lab, Deinococcus Radiodurans (D. Rad) survive extreme levels of radiation, extreme temperatures, dehydration, and exposure to genotoxic chemicals. Amazingly, they even have the ability to repair their own DNA, usually within 48 hours.
Known as an extremophile, bacteria such as D. Rad are of interest to NASA partly because they might be adaptable to help human astronauts survive on other worlds. A recent map of D. Rad's DNA might allow biologists to augment their survival skills with the ability to produce medicine, clean water and oxygen.
Already they have been genetically engineered to help clean up spills of toxic mercury. Likely one of the oldest surviving life forms, D. Rad was discovered by accident in the 1950s when scientists investigating food preservation techniques could not easily kill it.

Dunque che cosa stiamo guardando esattamente? Un riflesso? Un OVNI? O magari un qualcosa di simile a quello che viene chiamato - da alcuni bravissimi Ricercatori di nuova generazione (si veda quanto proposto dal Gruppo chiamato 'Thunderbolts') - 'plasma discharge' (una sorta di super-fulmine, in parole povere)?
Impossibile rispondere, per ora, ma ogni dettaglio in più che riusciamo a cogliere ed interpretare equivale ad un passo (magari piccolo, ma meglio di niente) in avanti, verso la comprensione.
A proposito di "plasma discharge": e se l'Apollo 13 fosse stato colpito da uno di questi "space lightnings"?!?...

Il contorno rispetta in maniera quasi perfetta quello che è il contorno dell’Anomalia e comprende le zone d’ombra nella parte che poggia sul terreno (ad esclusione della zona sinistra).
A mio parere questa zona non rispetta in maniera fedele quella che potrebbe essere la forma reale dell’Anomalia in quanto essa, come si vede, poggia su pietre e sabbia che ne mascherano i veri lineamenti.
