Barca)142 visite...Questo frame, a nostro parere STRAORDINARIO, lo commentammo già parecchio tempo fa (Marzo 2007): che cos'è quel "cristallo" che giace a circa un metro da Opportunity, ci chiedemmo? Si tratta di ghiaccio? Un diamante? Quarzo (anche se la NASA dice che il quarzo, su Marte, è raro)?
Un'immagine chiarissima, quasi impressionante; un quesito importante e per nulla ozioso. Una possibile Scoperta.

Caption ESA:"This is a mosaic of Olympus Mons, the highest volcano on Mars, which towers 26 Km above the surrounding plains. The image covers an area of approx. 600.000 sq/km.
The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA’s Mars Express Orbiter imaged the Region over 18 orbits.

This image is an ortho-image mosaic, where the projecting rays are perpendicular to the plane of projection.
This corrects any deformations introduced by an imaging camera and therefore such an image can be fitted directly on to a map.

From the observations, 16 HRSC orbit strips, with around 35 Gigabytes of data were used to generate a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) mosaic and an ortho-image mosaic. The DTM mosaic has a resolution of 150 mt/pixel. The resolution of individual nadir images (taken by pointing the camera vertically down to the surface) is in the range of 12 to 40 mt/pixel. Individual terrain models with a resolution of up to 50 mt were derived for every HRSC image strip.

The HR DTMs and ortho-images are derived through a complex process. Matching surface features were used to 'stitch' the images strips together, and complex geometrical calculations were used to produce the 3D coordinates of all measured points in the area".

Voyagers-01.gifTowards the "Terra Incognita" (2)63 visiteIt is appropriate to consider the VIM as three distinct phases: the termination shock, heliosheath exploration, and interstellar exploration phases. The two Voyager spacecraft began the VIM operating, and are still operating, in an environment controlled by the Sun's magnetic field with the plasma particles being dominated by those contained in the expanding supersonic solar wind. This is the characteristic environment of the termination shock phase. At some distance from the Sun, the supersonic solar wind will be held back from further expansion by the interstellar wind. The first feature to be encountered by a spacecraft as a result of this interstellar wind/solar wind interaction will be the termination shock where the solar wind slows from supersonic to subsonic speed and large changes in plasma flow direction and magnetic field orientation occur.

Passage through the Termination Shock ends the Termination Shock Phase (TSP) and begins the Heliosheath Exploration Phase (HEP). Voyager 1 in 2004 completed the TSP of the mission when the spacecraft was 94 AU from the Sun. After passage through the Termination Shock, the spacecraft will be operating in the Heliosheath environment which is still dominated by the Sun's Magnetic Field and particles contained in the Solar Wind. The HEP ends with passage through the Heliopause which is the outer extent of the Sun's Magnetic Field and Solar Wind. The thickness of the Heliosheath is uncertain and could be tens of AU thick taking several years to traverse. Passage through the Heliopause begins the Interstellar Exploration Phase (IEP) with the spacecraft operating in an interstellar wind dominated environment. This interstellar exploration is the ultimate goal of the Voyager Interstellar Mission.
