The crater is about 750 mt (a little less than half a mile) across.
That is about six times wider than "Endurance Crater" where Opportunity spent six months examining in 2004, and about 35 times wider than "Eagle Crater" where Opportunity first landed. The walls of Victoria hold the scientific allure of much taller stacks of geological layers -- providing the record of a longer span of the area's environmental history -- than Opportunity has been able to inspect on the Meridiani plains or at smaller craters.
This image created by the U.S. Geological Survey uses a digital elevation model generated from computer analysis of three images taken by the Mars Orbiter Camera aboard NASA's Mars Global Surveyor orbiter. The vertical dimension is not exaggerated relative to the horizontal dimensions. The crater is about 70 mt (230 feet) deep.
The images used for providing the stereo information to calculate relative elevation were taken on Feb. 1, 2004 (http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/r10_r15/images/R14/R1401689.html) and April 16, 2005 (http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/s05_s10/images/S05/S0500863.html).
Opportunity is approaching Victoria from North-West".

Cerchiatura Rossa e Blu: tre rocce "gemelle"...;
Cerchiatura Blu: roccia a "ceppo" ossìa, al pari delle "Butt-Hills" - e cioè le "colline a ceppo" - un macigno la cui porzione superiore sembra essere stata segata via (è ovvio che si tratta di rocce davvero strane e che ci possono far pensare ad autentiche bizzarrie della Natura oppure a delle manipolazioni digitali);
Cerchiatura Rossa: un sassetto con tre fori perfettamente allineati (ecco un'altra - inspiegabile ed affascinante - bizzarria ricorrente).

SOL407-2N162504460EFFA776P1875L0M1.jpgThe "Nest", in the twilight59 visiteForse ci sbagliamo, ma la nostra sensazione è che il "Nido" (ossìa quel gruppo di rocce che presentano una dislocazione sul terreno (almeno in apparenza) davvero "poco casuale" sia visibile anche in questo frames ripreso, a giudicare dalla sua luminosità, nelle ore del secondo pomeriggio Marziano (diremmo fra le 15:30 e le 16:30). Purtroppo le indicazioni riguardanti l'ora locale esatta della ripresa, da qualche tempo a questa parte, vengono sempre più frequentemente omesse (idem dicasi per le informazioni relative ai filtri/colore usati).

The mosaic was made from over 140 individual TV frames taken about two hours after encounter, at a range of 37.300 miles (60.000 Km ). North is at top. The limb is at right, as is the illuminating sunlight. The equator crosses the planet about two-thirds of the way from the top of the disc. The terminator - such as the line-separating day from night - is about 190° West longitude. The planet shows a gibbous disc-more than half-illuminated. This hemisphere is dominated by smooth plains, rather than heavily cratered terrain, and resembles portions of the Moon's maria in general shape. Half of a very large, multi-ringed basin named Caloris Basin appears near the center of the disc near the terminator. Its surrounding mountain ring is 800 miles (1.300 Km) in diameter".

"Microscopic Imager" (2)90 visiteIn compenso, a fronte della non conoscenza di tutte queste informazioni che sono - semplicemente - fondamentali, la NASA ci dice che le due immagini che Vi proponiamo sono state riprese, rispettivamente, fra le 12:31 e le 12:40 MLT nell'Area di Meridiani Planum. Ottimo: due informazioni che, tutto sommato, non ci servono assolutamente a nulla. Qualcuno (in Francia) ha scritto di recente che la NASA (a differenza dell'ESA) "aiuta la Scienza nel senso che rende partecipi del 'gioco' anche i non scienziati i quali, comunque, possono vedere, valutare, esprimere opinioni etc.". Noi non sappiamo se costui stesse scherzando o se parlasse sul serio. Noi sappiamo solo che la NASA non sta aiutando proprio nessuno e che l'unica attività che pone in essere con estrema ed allarmante cura e precisione attiene la "miscelatura" dei dati disponibili. Per quanto attiene l'ESA (che si rivolge al pubblico, a detta del Dr Lagrange, come fa un "detentore di cultura" verso un "ignorante") non ci sentiamo di esprimerci.
