Star Forming Region DR21.jpgStar forming region "DR 21 - Cygni" - SST89 visiteDeep in the normally hidden recesses of giant molecular cloud DR 21, a stellar nursery has been found creating some of the most massive stars yet recorded. The orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera opened the window into the cloud in mid- infrared light. The cloud is opaque to visible light because of dense interstellar dust. Noticeable in the above representative color infrared Spitzer image are huge bubbles, a complex tapestry of dust and gas and very massive stars. The infrared filaments actually glow because of organic compounds known as "PAHs". The intricate patterns are caused by complex interactions between interstellar winds, radiation pressures, magnetic fields, and gravity. The pictured region spans about 75 LY and lies about 6.000 LY distant toward the constellation of Cygnus.

Asbolus.jpg8405 Asbolus130 visiteThis is an artist's impression of object called 8405 Asbolus: a 48-mile-wide (about 80 Km) chunk of ice and dust that lies between Saturn and Uranus. Astronomers using NASA's HST were surprised to find that one side of the object (also called a "Centaur") looks like it has a fresh crater less than 10 MY old, exposing bright underlying ice. Actually, Hubble didn't directly see the Crater - the object is too small and far away - but a measure of its Surface Composition shows a complex chemistry that could be explained by the presence of a huge Impact Crater. The event that caused the Impact Crater on 8405 Asbolus may be the same one that knocked it out of the Kuiper's Belt (which is a "Ring of Comet Nuclei" located just beyond Pluto's orbit).

The landscape shows little variation in local topography, though a narrow peak only 7 to 8 Km away is visible on the horizon. A circular depression, similar to the one dubbed Sleepy Hollow, can be seen in the foreground. Compared to the Viking and Pathfinder Landing Sites, the terrain at Gusev Crater, Spirit's Landing Site, is flat and speckled with a sparse array of rocks".

Aurora Borealis.jpgAurora over Wisconsin109 visiteLo "spettacolo" delle Aurore Boreali che stanno manifestandosi un pò ovunque in Nord America non accenna a diminuire: questa si è verificata nel Wisconsin. Ecco la caption originale da "NASA - Picture of the Day" del 17 Novembre 2004:"The auroral displays of the past week are being reported as some of the most beautiful in memory. In particular, impressive auroral bands fanned out over much of eastern North America after sunset on November 8. The multicolored aurora pictured above was caught reflecting in one of the many small lakes in central Wisconsin near that time. Continued solar activity might create more aurora visible over the next few nights as the Leonids meteor shower peaks". Non comprendiamo, a dire il vero, la curiosa relazione implicita che ci sembra essere stata fatta tra il verificarsi di queste Aurore ed i prossimo picco delle Leonidi.
Forse non abbiamo capito bene o magari ci sta semplicemente sfuggendo qualcosa...

Asteroids-Opportunity-041007163946.jpgThe path to immortality: an asteroid named "Opportunity"60 visiteL'immortalità (o quasi), in qualche modo, le Sonde Spirit ed Opportunity sono riuscite a guadagnarsela: il lavoro svolto dai due Rover, infatti, è stato (ed è tuttora) così prezioso e scientificamente significativo che si è pensato - ed è la prima volta in assoluto che accade una cosa simile - di dedicare ai due robot (e NON, quindi, ad un "essere umano"...) due asteroidi scoperti all'inizio degli anni '60, ma definitivamente riconosciuti e codificati - mediante l'assegnazione di un numero seriale ufficiale - solo nel 2002 (in questo caso, però, non si è trattato di inefficienza, bensì di ottemperanza alle rigide regole stabilite dalla IAU - International Astronomical Union - le quali "...require asteroids to be observed during 4 separate cycles around the Earth and Sun before they become eligible for numbering and naming...").

SOL213-223-Cahokia_Panorama-PIA06917.jpg"Cahokia" Panorama - The "Columbia Hills" - Soles 213 - 223 (Approximate True Colors; credits: NASA/JPL/Cornell)114 visiteThis stunning image mosaic of the "Columbia Hills" is the first 360-degree panorama taken since the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit arrived at the hills over a month ago. The rover has been busy studying the rocks here, which show evidence of past alteration by water. The dark patch of soil to the right is the spot where Spirit stopped for engineering work on its right front wheel. Spirit's tracks can be followed from there all the way back to "Bonneville Crater" and the original landing site, more than 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) away.
This approximate true-color image, nicknamed the "Cahokia Panorama" after the Native American archaeological site near St. Louis, was acquired between Sol 213 to 223 (such as Aug. 9 to 19, 2004). The panorama consists of 470 images acquired through six panoramic camera filters (750 to 480 nanometers). It took until the week of sol 237 (Sept. 2) to downlink all the data back to Earth. Several more weeks of image processing and geometric mapping by team members at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., were required to stitch all the images together into this spectacular mosaic.
