The boulder gets its name from the turtle-like pieces of rock sitting on the top of the main boulder. Ed was so busy at this point that he never noticed the turtle. Note the large white inclusion in the right-hand third of the boulder about half way up from the bottom. Note, also, the skirt of soil - called a "fillet" - built up out of ejecta from nearby impacts splashing against the sides of the rock.

Speriamo che quando l'Uomo metterà fisicamente piede in questa zona (fra 10, 100 o 1000 anni), si ricordi comunque di pulire un pò...

OPP-SOL307-1P155433729EFF38EVP2555R1M1.jpgTipuna Rock and "water on Mars" (4) - H. 11:42 MLT - SOL 30772 visiteSe la piccola chiazza grigia che vediamo alla base di Tipuna è effettivamente una piccola pozza d'acqua, allora dobbiamo assumere che quest'acqua sgorga direttamente dalle pareti di Endurance. Il che vuol dire che, da qualche parte, sulle pareti di Endurance, c'è una sorgente. Ma se questa sorgente esiste e da essa "sgorga dell'acqua", come mai la forma e le dimensioni della "pozzanghera", a distanza di ore ed ore tra un frame e l'altro, non cambiano mai? Insomma: Marte forse non è gelido come dicono alla NASA, ma è certamente (ed ovviamente) molto più freddo della Terra. Assumendo che l'acqua in questione sia liquida e corrente solo per alcune (poche) ore del giorno (salvo poi ghiacciare, dal pomeriggio alla tarda mattinata del giorno seguente) dovremmo - proprio in virtù di questo fatto - notare delle consistenti differenze fra le dimensioni e la luminosità della pozzanghera tra un frame e l'altro. Differenze che, invece, NON si vedono!

Neil has moved around to the south of the ladder a little bit. Note the near-side handrail and the triangular Commander's window above and to the right of the hatch. There is a reflection of the lunar surface in the window. To Buzz's left, we can see a set of thrusters and the plume deflector that protects the LM from the downward thruster exhaust.
