Cameron:"On the night of November 2, 1958, Soviet astronomer Nikolai A. Kozyrev witnessed a strange phenomenon while making spectrograms of the crater Alphonsus with the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory's 50-inch reflector. As he watched through the telescope's guiding eyepiece, he saw the crater's central peak blur and turn an unusual reddish color. The spectrograms confirmed his visual impressions of a volcanic event; they showed an emission spectrum of carbon vapor (S&T: February, 1959, page 184).
On July 19, 1969, the Apollo 11 command module had just achieved orbit around the Moon when the Mission Control Center in Houston received word that amateur astronomers reported a TLP in the vicinity of the crater Aristarchus. Asked to check out the situation, astronaut Neil Armstrong looked out his window toward the earthlit region and observed an "area that is considerably more illuminated than the surrounding area. It just has -- seems to have a slight amount of fluorescence to it." Although he wasn't sure, Armstrong believed the region was Aristarchus".

OPP-SOL116_(2).jpgEndurance Crater full Panorama496 visiteIn accordo a quanto si vede nella Mappa predisposta dalla NASA stessa, i due rottami in questione - (1) backshell + parachute e (2) heatshield - dovrebbero giacere in posizioni profondamente differenti. In particolare: (2) dovrebbe trovarsi in prossimità di Endurance Crater. Nell'immagine a colori che riprende in campo lungo Endurance Crater (vedi Sez. "Mars in Colors") quando il Rover era ancora lontano, accanto ad Endurance si vede un oggetto metallico (NON piccolo!) al quale, per giunta, SEMBRA (cerchiamo di essere sempre più prudenti...) esserci attaccato qualcosa. Ora la componente (2), come saprete, non deve avere attaccato a sè assolutamente NULLA. Ciò premesso, gli scenari che emergono sono questi: a) l'immagine a colori che mostra qualcosa di luccicante accanto ad Endurance è stata da noi male interpretata e l'oggetto che ci sembrava avere attaccato qualcosa a sè è, invece, un corpo unico e solitario il quale è effettivamente lo Scudo Termico della Navicella...

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, developed and manages the Mars Pathfinder mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. JPL is an operating division of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The IMP was developed by the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory under contract to JPL. Peter Smith is the Principal investigator".

9-Venus.jpgVenus from 2.700.000 Km (Galileo Probe)214 visiteLa competizione USA/URSS, finchè l'URSS è esistita, ha dato grandi risultati in termini di inventiva, volontà, capacità di fronteggiare le difficoltà e superare gli ostacoli (il Programma Apollo ne è la prova lampante!) ma poi...Dissoltasi l'Unione Sovietica e svanita la 'corsa' verso le Stelle, si è incominciato a guardare il 'portafogli' e, dato che le missioni spaziali "costano care", la NASA (o dovremmo dire "Il Congresso"?!?) ha ritenuto più saggio, sicuro ed economico limitarsi ad inviare sonde programmate per entrare in orbita attorno a Venere e poi scattare foto a raggi X della superficie, così da superare l'ostacolo costituito dalla coltre perenne di nubi che sovrasta il Pianeta, SENZA dover ricorrere al landing ed alla successiva, rapida ed inevitabile perdita della navicella.

ONE SMALL STEP.jpgOne small step...197 visiteNeil Armstrong sta per mettere piede sulla Luna: in Italia era la notte del 21 Luglio 1969. La Targa trasportata sull'Apollo 11 ed in seguito lasciata lassù recita:
"HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON JULY 1969 A.D. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND"
Armstrong è stato il primo e, dopo di lui, almeno altri 11 Uomini sono scesi, hanno camminato, fatto esperimenti, viaggiato in "Rover", mangiato e dormito sul nostro Satellite.
Chi sarà, dunque, il Tredicesimo, e quando?...
