Jupiter~1.jpgThe "Eyes" of Jupiter: a change of colors could mean a climate change?60 visiteJupiter's Great Red Spot is a swirling storm seen for over 300 years, since the beginning of telescopic observations. But in February 2006, planetary imager Christopher Go noticed it had been joined by Red Spot Jr - formed as smaller whitish oval-shaped storms merged and then developed the remarkable reddish hue. This sharp HST image showing the two salmon-colored Jovian storms was recorded in April 2006. About half the size of the original Red Spot, Red Spot Jr. is similar in diameter to planet Earth. Seen here below and left of the ancient storm system, it trails the Great Red Spot by about an hour as the planet rotates from left to right. While astronomers still don't exactly understand why Jupiter's red spots are red, they do think the appearance of Red Spot Jr. provides evidence for climate change on the Solar System's ruling Gas Giant.

The bright sky near the Sun is apparently a lighter bluish color due to 'forward scattering'. The blue seen here is probably more camera induced than real. On Mars the 'Raleigh Scattering' which colors our sky blue is greatly diminished by the low atmospheric pressure. Although no obvious clouds were reported, The horizontal texture in the sky to the left of the overexposed region might just be some weak cloud detail.

Umbra Fugax-1.jpgUmbra Fugax85 visiteSiamo al termine della spettacolare eclissi totale del 29 Marzo 2006 e l'ombra della Luna sta già lasciando il posto al Sole. Se osservate il frame a schermo pieno e con una certa attenzione dovreste riuscire a notare che, in alcune zone del cielo - già quasi del tutto libere dalla "notte" - si intravedono ancora dei corpi luminosi puntiformi che, ad una prima e sommaria occhiata, potrebbero sembrare delle stelle molto luminose che stanno per svanire nella luce del giorno. Ma non è così: si tratta, a nostro parere, di un abbastanza consueto e caratteristico photoartifact.
In ogni caso, un frame davvero molto bello.
Caption originale:"During the March 29, 2006 total Solar Eclipse, the Moon's dark central shadow (or "umbra") is vanishing beyond the horizon in this dramatic view of the landscape a few km South-East of Incesu, Anatolia, Turkey. The large, snow covered mountain in the distance is 3.250 mt high volcano Hasan Dag. The foreground is growing brighter as eclipse watchers are just beginning to see rays of sunlight peek around the lunar limb, while the mountains on the horizon, left of Hasan Dag, are still completely shadowed by the Moon. For the watchers along this part of the shadow track, the total phase of the eclipse lasted less than 4', as the umbra raced over them at more than 3000 Km per hour".

This type of trough forms through the collapse of surface materials into the subsurface and often begins as a series of individual pit craters. Over time, continued collapse increases the diameter of individual pits until finally, adjacent pits merge to form a trough such as the one captured in this image. The deep shadowed area is caused in part by an overhang; layered rock beneath this overhang is less resistant to erosion, and thus has retreated tens of meters backward, beneath the overhang. A person could walk up inside this "cave" formed by the overhanging layered material".

(1)301 visiteQuesto detail mgnf è stato ottenuto dal NASA - Original Apollo 17 frame AS 17-145-22202 (pubblicato integralmente in Reserved Area). Indicato dal n. 7, un dettaglio segnalatoci dall'Amico (e Socio) Dr Gianluigi Barca il quale, come noi d'altronde, non è riuscito a spiegarsi che cosa possa essere quella specie di macchia rossa che si vede in basso, a pochi metri dal LM. Si tratta di un semplice effetto di distorsione cromatica forse? O è qualcosa di reale (tipo della vernice o, se vogliamo essere macabri, del sangue)?
Per la risposta, diamo la parola al Dr Alessio Feltri il quale, come sempre, ci propone una intrigantissima - e, sicuramente per molti versi anche un pò sconcertante - spiegazione...

The red sky in the background and the blue around the Sun are approximately as they would appear to the human eye. The color of the Sun itself is not right - the Sun was over exposed in each of the 3 color images that were used to make this picture - and it might be near white or slightly bluish.
