The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft's narrow-angle camera on Sept. 20, 2005, through a filter combination sensitive to polarized green light. The image was acquired at a distance of approx. 2,1 MKM (about 1,3 MMs) from Dione and at a Sun-Dione-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 64°. Resolution in the original image was 12 Km per pixel. The image has been magnified by a factor of two to aid visibility".
Nota: un'immagine "modesta" di Dione, ripresa da una grande distanza e che - stranamente - evidenzia davvero molto bene la "profondità" dei rilievi Dioniani. Curioso, trattandosi di un frame NON 3D.

Siamo infatti nelle prossimità dell'outcrop conosciuto come "Jibsheet": un outcrop "mutante", come potrete notare anche Voi osservando i diversi frames che Vi proponiamo. Un outcrop "mutante" e dunque, almeno in teoria, un outcrop unico ed eccezionale...
O forse no.
Forse, nelle costanti "mutazioni" di queste rocce non c'è nulla di davvero interessante meritare un'investigazione: la NASA, infatti, oltre alle solite annotazioni vaghe ed inutili, si è ben guardata dallo spendere parole su questo nuovo "miracolo": il Miracolo di Jibsheet, la "Roccia Mutante", appunto...

Cerchiatura Rossa: stabile, instabile e/o apparente. Qual'è l'equilibrio su cui si "regge" questo macigno?

Dione-PIA07658.jpgCutting Dione...76 visiteDione is partly occulted by Saturn's Rings in this nearly edge-on view, taken from less than 1/10th of 1° above the Ring-Plane. The side of the Rings nearer to the Cassini spacecraft was masked by Saturn's shadow at the time and appears dark.
Bright, wispy fractures on Dione's trailing Hemisphere curl around the horizon. Sunlit terrain seen on Dione is on the moon's Saturn-facing Hemisphere.
North is up.
The image was taken in infrared light (centered at 752 nanometers) with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Nov. 3, 2005 at a distance of approximately 2.5 million kilometers (1.5 million miles) from Dione and at a Sun-Dione-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 109 degrees. Resolution in the original image was 15 kilometers (9 miles) per pixel.

Noi opteremmo - vista la forma e la luminosità - per la (lontana) Terra, ma potremmo sbagliarci...

SOL716-2N189939719EFFAMCNP1600R0M1.jpgThe "Sword" - Sol 71676 visiteCome segnalatoci dall'Amico Massimo Granzo, nella Cerchiatura Verde potete vedere una roccia dalla forma apparentemente curiosa e che ci potrebbe ricordare una sorta di spada o di pugnale, con impugantura a "quarto di luna" e parte anteriore di forma triangolare.
Si tratta di un "manufatto" (assimilabile all'amigdala, una roccia/utensile a forma di mandorla risalente al Paleolitico Inferiore)?
L'ipotesi è ovviamente suggestiva ma noi, in tutta onestà, riteniamo che si tratti solo della parte superiore di una roccia più grande e parzialmente sepolta. Una porzione di roccia che ha assunto questa strana forma a causa dei depositi di sabbia che l'hanno parzialmente ricoperta - e ciò significa che, a nostro parere, più che essere la roccia "strana", sono i depositi sabbiosi che, ricoprendola in parte, ne hanno determinato la forma, "ridisegnandola" (e tutto questo senza nulla togliere, ovviamente, al "colpo d'occhio" del nostro Amico Massimo al quale vanno comunque - e come sempre - i nostri complimenti e ringraziamenti).
