Sizes have been added to indicate scale of these features. Initially thought to be rocks or ice blocks, they are more pebble-sized. The two rock-like objects just below the middle of the image are about 15 cm (left) and 4 cm (centre) across respectively, at a distance of about 85 cm from Huygens. The surface is darker than originally expected, consisting of a mixture of water and hydrocarbon ice. There is also evidence of erosion at the base of these objects, indicating possible fluvial activity".

OPP-SOL352-1N159437106EFF40DRP1974L0M1.jpgFarewell Skull-Rock! - Sol 35277 visiteLe analisi sono terminate: una volta accertato che Skull-Rock è un pezzo di ferro e nickel e che non si tratta di una roccia indigena, Opportunity si ritrae e, probabilmente, si avvia ad iniziare la sua (speriamo lunga) marcia verso Sud.
In questo frame, oltre ad un bellissimo scorcio di Skull-Rock, le solite tracce, nette e profonde, lasciate dalle ruote del Rover sulle sabbie (umide?) di Marte ed i Martian Berries che costellano tutta questa zona di Meridiani Planum.
Un frame davvero molto bello.

SOL318-325-Husband_Hill-PIA07334_br2-04.jpgColumbia Hills: "Husband Hill's Region" - full 360° panorama (5 - Approximate True Colors; credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech)77 visiteLa pianura attraversata da Spirit per quasi un anno, infine (che vedete molto bene nei sub-frames 1 e 5 di questa carrellata), è stata anch'essa 'piallata ed offuscata'.
Il frame "BIG", se lo andrete a visionare, è altresì deludentissimo per quanto attiene la definizione dei dettagli posti in campo medio e lungo. O meglio: alcuni dettagli (specie quelli posizionati al centro ed alla Dx di chi guarda) sono splendidamente chiari, anche se lontani dal punto di ripresa. Altri, magari decisamente più vicini, sono annebbiati e confusi.
Altre tracce - secondo noi evidenti - di abrasioni e cancellazioni di particolari (riteniamo operate usando un aerografo o qualcosa di simile) nonchè una "nuvola" di puntini luminosi (uno 'spruzzo' fuori bersaglio?!?), sono ben visibili sullo skyline alla Dx di chi guarda.
Last but not least: le colline più lontane (che dovrebbero essere visibili sul filo dell'orizzonte) sembrano disegnate a mano e poi colorate con i "pastelli"...
Il nostro voto all'"Opera"? Un bel 4=!

SOL392-detail2-2P161170457EFFA400P2369L7M1.jpg"Clear - Unclear Rock" - from Sol 39277 visiteUna roccia piuttosto lunga che, nel suo lato inferiore, ci mostra dei rilievi piuttosto chiari e marcati, quasi certamente di origine naturale; tuttavia, se poi guardate verso il suo margine superiore, noterete una sorta di "arco" (rivolto verso il basso) che divide la "porzione NITIDA" della roccia da un'altra "porzione OPACA" e dai margini confusi ed indistinti. La porzione inferiore della roccia è anche "luminosa" (bianca, in alcuni punti, come se fosse lucida e riflettesse i raggi del Sole); la porzione superiore è "buia" e "grigia". Elaborando lil dettaglio - nonostante la povera definizione - emergono con chiarezza "piallature" e "tagli".
Che cosa sia la roccia "Chiara-Non Chiara" non lo sappiamo, ma che il frame sia stato MANIPOLATO è del tutto evidente!

This strategy was designed to produce stereo image pairs, which take advantage of distortions induced by the different views to provide details of the surface topography. This is a stereo image pair of Crater Geopert-Meyer, named for the 20th Century Polish physicist and Nobel laureate (60° north latitude; 26,5° east longitude). The Crater, 35 Km (22 miles) in diameter, lies above an escarpment at the edge of a ridge belt in southern Ishtar Terra. West of the crater the scarp has more than 1 Km of relief. Perception of relief may be obtained with stereo glasses or a stereoscope".

The landing area inside Gusev Crater is filled with dark streaks left behind when Dust Devils pick dust up from an area. Winds flow into and out of Gusev Crater every day".

Spirit non lo ha dimenticato e, a modo suo, ci ricorda qualcosa che dovremmo mantenere sempre in mente e che invece dimentichiamo molto spesso. Che cosa?
Che siamo "piccoli" e, in questo Grande Universo, probabilmente del tutto insignificanti...

It was taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit one hour before sunrise on the 63rd Sol of its mission. The image is a mosaic of images taken by the Rover's NavCam showing a broad view of the sky, and an image taken by the Rover's PanCam of Earth. The contrast in the PanCam image was increased 2 times to make Earth easier to see.
The inset shows a combination of 4 PanCam images zoomed in on Earth. The arrow points to Earth. Earth was too faint to be detected in images taken with the PanCam's color filters".
