Spotted for the first time by Mariner 10 in the 1970s, they may be due to the presence of dust and aerosols in the atmosphere, but their true nature is still unexplained. "Venus Express has the tools to investigate these structures in detail. Studies have already begun to dig into the properties of the complex wind fields on Venus, to understand the atmospheric dynamics on local and global scales".

Venus Express also made use for the first time ever from orbit of the so-called 'infrared windows' present in the atmosphere of Venus – if observed at certain wavelengths, it is possible to detect thermal radiation leaking from the deepest atmospheric layers, revealing what lies beneath the dense cloud curtain situated at about 60 Km altitude".

It clearly shows the "two-toned" surface of this large rock.
The nature of this color difference is not known, however.
It might consist of wind-blown dust accumulated on the surface (the rock is leaning into the prevailing wind) or might be evidence of a break from a larger boulder as it was deposited in the ancient flood that scoured this area".

AMIE obtained the image on 30 January 2006 from a distance of about 2100 Km from the surface, with a ground resolution of 190 mt per pixel. The imaged area is centred at a Latitude of 27,8º North and a Longitude of 98,6º East.

Crater Lomonosov is a nice example for a large crater (92 Km of diameter) which was filled by lava after the impact, thus exhibiting a flat floor. The terraced walls indicate 'slumping', that is sliding of the rocks downwards due to gravity after the end of the impact. The small craters inside Lomonosov are the result of impacts into this lava floor which happened after the formation of Lomonosov".

Certo, potrebbe trattarsi anche di altro, ma...Che cosa?!?

E poi, in fondo, la querelle sui "colori di Marte" non ce la siamo inventata noi, ma è stata proprio la NASA a "crearla", pasticciando e confondendo tutto quanto era (ed è) umanamente possibile pasticciare e confondere (esempi? Verificate nelle nostre Gallerie: di Cieli Marziani dell'alba, del giorno pieno e del tramonto -"according to NASA" - ce ne sono tanti, anzi: ce ne sono tantissimi ma... sono tutti diversi, anche se tutti in "approximate true colors" - secondo la NASA -. Come mai?).
