The Rings-PIA08036~0.jpgThe Rings, 26 Taurus and reddish Hydrogen54 visiteThis image is a false-color ultraviolet view of Saturn's B-Ring (center) and A-Ring (right), separated by a large gap known as the Cassini Division.
It shows a bright horizontal streak, created by a series of time lapse images involving a star named 26 Taurus.
The image was made over a 9-hour period as the star drifted behind the Rings. The opacity of the outer A-Ring is most pronounced on its inner edge, indicating more ring debris is present there. The Encke Gap, much smaller than the Cassini Division, is visible near the outer edge of the A-Ring. The B-Ring is significantly more opaque than the A-Ring, indicating a greater density of ring material when imaged from above.
The sky behind the Rings glows red in the ultraviolet wavelengths from the hydrogen gas that fills the Solar System.
The images were processed from data taken by the ultraviolet imaging spectrograph aboard the Cassini spacecraft in May 2005.

(1) - Sol 80254 visiteUn'attentissima lettura di alcuni frames relativi al Sol 802 da parte del nostro Amico e Socio Gianluigi Barca ci servono da spunto per operare una riflessione: quando vediamo qualcosa di "strano" nei frames NASA, come fare a distinguere un'Anomalìa vera e propria da un semplice vizio del frame (un "photoartifact", come si dice in "gergo", il quale può avere 1000 cause - le più comuni ricondicibili a corpi estranei, tipo microgranuli di polvere, ad es., intrappolati nelle ottiche della fotocamera; minuscoli graffi della lente impiegata per lo scatto; errori o gaps occorso/i durante la trasmissione dei dati a Terra etc.)? Una risposta valida in assoluto non esiste, come abbiamo già detto; una risposta "abbastanza" valida la si può rinvenire nell'unione fra l'analisi sequenziale del frame (o dei frames) che mostra la presunta Anomalìa in rapporto ai frames immediatamente precedenti e successivi, ben miscelata alla sensibilità ed esperienza del Ricercatore Analista.

(2) - Sol 80254 visiteTutto ciò premesso, dobbiamo innanzitutto lodare l'occhio che il Dr Barca ha avuto nell'individuazione del dettaglio, e quindi - ahinoi... - dobbiamo anche dire che però, con ogni probabilità, si tratta di un photoartifact (un dead-pixel, versimilmente).
Come siamo arrivati a questa conclusione (interlocutoria, ovviamente, ma sostanziabile)? Mettendo in sequenza tutti i frames (divisi per Left e Right PanCam frames) e quindi abbiamo individuato le coordinate del punto luminoso.
Risultato: abbiamo visto che la presunta Anomalìa, anche se - a vista - sembra effettivamente un corpo reale (una "luce"), in realtà, nonostante il cambio di angolo di ripresa, si mantiene sempre sulle medesime coordinate.
Essa, in altre parole, rimane FERMA e FISSA, bloccata sempre allo stesso punto.

(3) - Sol 80254 visiteUn punto che "cambia" solo se cambia l'occhio della PanCam che guarda e che fissa l'immagine. In altre parole: il dettaglio/presunta Anomalìa non è funzione del paesaggio ripreso! Esso è funzione della fotocamera che riprende.
Questa considerazione, anche se - ovviamente - possiamo sbagliarci, è di regola sufficiente per concludere che il dettaglio investigato NON E' un dettaglio reale, bensì il risultato di un vizio dell'immagine (photoartifact, o aberrazione o quant'altro).
L'attività investigativa svolta da ognuno di noi (Ricercatore, Appassionato o semplice Amateur) è soggetta, per essere credibile, ad un processo che chiamiamo "Validazione".
E la Validazione non è affatto finalizzata a nullificare il prodotto di una ricerca: anzi! Essa è la cartina di tornasole che ci permette di distinguere (e di aiutare gli altri a distinguere) fra "sensazione" e "realtà oggettiva"
Ottimo, quindi, il lavoro svolto dal Dr Barca, ed ottimo il lavoro svolto dalla nostra Staff!

Si tratta, senza ombra di dubbio, di un paesaggio davvero "alieno" e, se osservate i frames a schermo pieno, noterete tanti altri piccoli dettagli di grande interesse e curiosità...
