The view spans about 160° in azimuth from left to right and consists of images acquired by Spirit's PanCam on Spirit's Sol 708 and 710 (such as Dec. 30, 2005 and Jan. 1, 2006). Spirit used the PanCam's 750-, 530- and 430-nnmt filters to capture the colors on Mars. Scientists have eliminated seams between individual frames in the sky portion of the mosaic to better simulate the vista a person standing on Mars would see. Spirit spent several days acquiring images, spectral data, and compositional and mineralogical information about these large sand deposits before continuing downhill toward Home Plate".

The panorama originally consisted of 635 separate images in 4 different PanCam filters, and covers 360° of terrain around the Rover and the full Rover Deck. Since the time that this panorama was acquired, and while engineers have been diagnosing and testing Opportunity's RA, the panorama has been expanded to include more than 1.300 images of this terrain through all of the PanCam multispectral filters. This is the largest panorama acquired by either Rover during the Mission.
The panorama shown here is an approximate true-color rendering using PanCam's 750-, 530- and 430 nnmt filters. It is presented here as a cylindrical projection. Image-to-image seams have been eliminated from the Sky portion of the mosaic to better simulate the vista a person standing on Mars would see".

Visible on Tethys are the huge craters Odysseus (top) and Melanthius (bottom). The view looks toward the anti-Saturn side of Tethys.
Images taken using red, green and blue spectral filters were combined to create this color view. Tethys is apparently darker than Saturn at these wavelengths. The edge of the Planet appears fuzzy, which may indicate that we are seeing haze layers that are separated from the main cloud deck.
The images were acquired by the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Dec. 3, 2005, at a distance of approx. 2,5 MKM (about 1,6 MMs) from Saturn. The image scale is about 15 Km (app.x 9 miles) per pixel on Saturn and about 13 Km (app.x 8 miles) per pixel on Tethys".

The Team expected to use the subsequent 3-Sol plan to trench in El Dorado and the 3-Sol plan after that to examine the trench.
In order to prepare for the trench, the Team planned a scuff at the end of the drive.
The scuff was to be just a 1/3rd of a wheel turn to push up some of the sandy material. That would give engineers some data on the consistency of the material so the team would know how long to trench".

The Rover got a nice little mound and cut into a dune with the wheel scuff. The Science Team took a look at the scuff and decided it was in fact good enough for the science objectives without a need for trenching, so the Team ended up 3 Soles ahead of the game".

Questa risposta del suolo Marziano allo "scavare" di Spirit (ma anche di Opportunity) a noi, sinceramente, non sembra affatto una rarità. Forse la stranezza, in queste immagini, la si può individuare nell'incredibile luminosità che proviene da queste aree esposte al (pur debole) Sole di Marte.
Che cosa guardiamo? Dei semplici cristalli di sale frammisti a solfato di Ferro e pebbles (ossìa delle pietruzze particolarmente luccicanti e di natura cristallina - quarzi, per lo più)?
E se invece avessimo davanti delle distese di sabbie diamantifere?!?...
Scherzi a parte, di qualunque cosa si tratti, la sensazione che abbiamo ricavato - dopo 2 anni di investigazioni - è che su Marte, più o meno ovunque, basta rimuovere anche solo un pò dello strato di polveri e sabbie (arancioni o verdastre che sìano) le quali ricoprono la superficie del Pianeta, che subito l'aspetto di Marte cambia radicalmente.
Mars: the White Planet. Che dite? Suona bene?...
