Molto buona la definizione dell'immagine - a condizione che non cerchiate di ingrandirla troppo... - la quale ci permette di vedere con discreta soddisfazione la grande abbondanza di boulders e macigni di varie forme e dimensioni che sembrano caratterizzare tutta questa zona di Marte.

The view is a composite of 4 nearly identical wide-angle camera images, all taken using a filter sensitive to wavelengths of infrared light centered at 939 nnmts. The individual images have been combined and contrast-enhanced in such a way as to sharpen surface features and enhance overall brightness variations. Some of the territory in this view was covered by observations made by the Cassini synthetic aperture radar in October 2004 and February 2005. At large scales, there are similarities between the views taken by the imaging science subsystem cameras and the radar results, but there also are differences. For example, the center of the floor of the approximately 80-kilometer-wide (50-mile) crater identified by the radar team in February (near the center in this image, see PIA07368 for the radar image) is relatively bright at 2.2 centimeters, the wavelength of the radar experiment, but dark in the near-infrared wavelengths used here by Cassini's optical cameras. This brightness difference is also apparent for some of the surrounding material and could indicate differences in surface composition or roughness".

In the past, when Spirit was on an 11° slope, the Rover did not slip as much, but this terrain is much sandier than previous terrain Spirit has driven on. The Rover used to have a slip limit at 40%, so the Rover would automatically shut off if it slipped that much. The Rover team increased the allowable slippage to 60% in order to enable the Rover to progress and move forward...".

OPP-SOL428-1N166182752EFF52IGP0703L0M1.jpgOn the way to Erebus Crater (1) - Sol 42854 visiteSiamo arrivati nel Sol 428 di Opportunity e, a quanto pare, i Crateri Viking e Voyager già appartengono al passato: adesso il panorama che si stende davanti ad Opportunity è fatto solo di Side-Winders e di qualche macigno isolato. Più a Sud, invisibile ai nostri occhi in questa immagine (ma ne vedrete le pareti esterne nel prossimo frame), il Cratere Erebus. L'oggetto scuro visibile sulla linea dell'orizzonte (e che ci aveva fatto subito pensare ad una nuova - ed enigmatica - Singolarità di superficie), è solo un artefatto fotografico.

OPP-SOL428-1N166182803EFF52IGP0703R0M1.jpgOn the way to Erebus Crater (2)54 visiteEccolo laggiù, proprio sul filo dell'orizzonte, leggermente alla Vostra Dx: il profilo del rilievo che intravediamo è, di fatto, ancora indistinto, ma secondo noi si tratta proprio delle pareti esterne di Erebus Crater. Erebus è, come vediamo dalle immagini MGS, un Cratere dalla forma piuttosto rotondeggiante, leggermente più grande di Endurance ma decisamente "piccolo" se raffrontato con il Victoria Crater.
Un Cratere, quest'ultimo, che Opportunity - in un prossimo futuro, se tutto continuasse ad andare bene - proverà a raggiungere ed a riprendere...
