The enhanced image makes the red colors a little redder and blue colors a little bluer, allowing viewers to see differences too subtle to be seen without the exaggeration. When compared with an approximately true color image, the tailings from the RAT and the interior of the abraded holes are more prominent in this view. Being able to discriminate color variations helps scientists determine rocks' compositional differences and texture variations".

These calibration instruments, positioned on the solar panels of both Spirit and the Opportunity, are tools for both scientists and educators.
Scientists use the sundial to adjust the Rovers' PanCam, while students participating in NASA's Red Rover Goes to Mars program will monitor the dial to track time on Mars. The left image was captured near martian noon when the Sun was very high in the sky. The right image was acquired later in the afternoon when the Sun was lower in sky, casting longer shadows. The colored blocks in the corners of the MarsDial are used to fine-tune the PanCam's sense of color. Shadows cast on the MarsDial help scientists adjust the brightness of images".
Curiosità : lo sapevate che, tutto intorno al MarsDial, è stata riportata la dicitura "Marte" in 17 Lingue diverse (però non sappiamo quali...)?

(1)60 visiteLe rocce che vediamo in questo frame e nel successivo sono disposte in maniera totalmente casuale, così come suggeriscono le Leggi di Natura, oppure si potrebbe anche trattare di quello che resta di un'antichissima pavimentazione o forse di un muro?
E' ovvio che non ci è possibile dare una risposta ad un simile quesito, ma è altrettanto ovvio che, di tanto in tanto, ci capita di imbatterci in questi rilievi i quali, in qualche modo, ci 'richiamano' qualcosa alla mente. Ebbene, il fatto che, ogni tanto, quello che vediamo su Marte ci ricorda qualcosa di familiare (un muro, una costruzione diroccata, magari quello che resta di un'anfora etc.) è un evento del tutto naturale.
E' il nostro cervello che, senza essere 'richiesto', decide di 'interpretare' le informazioni che i nostri occhi gli mettono a disposizione. Interpretare: cioè ricondurre un 'evento nuovo' alla nostra sfera di conoscenza e di comprensione e, dunque, alla nostra 'esperienza' (al 'vissuto').

SOL034-Spirit_RAT_Flag_RGB-A034R1.jpgThe "American Flag" on the arm of Spirit - Sol 34 (approx. true colors; credits: NASA)60 visiteL'immagine che Vi proponiamo relativamente al Sol 34 di Spirit (il quale è appena 'guarito' della sua misteriosa malattia...) fa parte di un trittico a colori approssimativamente veri che ci racconta delle operazioni di pulizia e lucidatura di Adirondack da parte delle spazzole di cui il braccio del Rover è munito. Spicca, sul braccio di Spirit, la Bandiera Americana.
E' chiaro, a questo punto, che se i colori dell'American Flag sono realistici (così come ci dicono alla NASA), ne deve conseguire necessariamente che anche i colori dello sfondo lo sono...Giusto?!?

Titan-PIA07877.jpgA bright Red Spot on Titan (2)60 visiteThis dramatic color (but not true color) image was taken during the April 16, 2005, encounter with Titan. North is to the right. In the center it shows the dark lanes of the "H"-shaped feature discovered from Earth and first seen by Cassini last July shortly after it arrived in the Saturn system. At the southwestern edge of the "H" feature, near Titan's limb, is an area roughly 500 Km across. That area is 50% brighter when viewed using light with a wavelength of 5 microns, than the bright continent-sized area known as Xanadu. At wavelengths shorter than 5 microns, the spot is not unusually bright. The strange spectral character of this enigmatic feature has left the Team with 4 possibilities for its source: the spot could be a surface coloration, a mountain range, a cloud or a hot spot. The hot spot hypothesis will be tested during a Titan flyby on July 2, 2006, when the visual and infrared spectrometer will take nighttime images of this area. If it is hot, it will glow at night.

Abbiamo già commentato questo frame nella Sezione "Mars Spirit Anomalies", ma vale la pena spendere ancora due righe per questa ripresa di un oggetto luminoso che attraversa il campo visivo dell'occhio sinistro della PanCam, nel cuore della notte Marziana. Non è l'unico frame che ci mostra 'qualcosa' che brilla e si muove nel cielo di Marte ma, per motivi sconosciuti, questa immagine è stata ignorata. Lunar Explorer, a dire il vero, segnalò l'evento alla Segreteria del Dr Giovanni Caprara (esimio Giornalista del Corsera) il quale si era occupato di un fenomeno simile, ma il Dr Caprara, ahinoi, non trovò mai il tempo per scambiare due idee con i nostri Ricercatori (evidentemente troppo poca cosa per Lui che parla solo con la NASA). Ad ogni modo, questa è l'Anomalia: ora giudicate Voi.

Dopo questa 'dichiarazione aperta' (un evento già di per sè abbastanza sconcertante) e qualche debole riflesso dell'avvistamento su alcuni maggiori quotidiani, il discorso - senza che venisse più data alcuna informazione al riguardo - si chiudeva definitivamente.

Set against the fading red glow of the sky, the pale dot near the center of the picture is not a star, but a planet: Earth.
Earth appears elongated because it moved slightly during the 15" exposures. The faintly blue light from the Earth combines with the reddish sky glow to give the pale white appearance. The images were taken with Opportunity's PanCam, using 440, 530 and 750-nnmts color filters. In processing on the ground, the images were shifted slightly to compensate for Earth's motion between one image and the next".
