AMIE obtained these images on 13 January 2006, 1' apart from each other, from a distance of about 1220 Km(top frame) and 1196 Km (bottom frame) from the surface, with a ground resolution of 110 and 108 mt per pixel, respectively.
The area shown in the top image is centred at a Latitude of 16,2º South and Longitude 40,2º West, while the bottom images is centred at a Latitude of 17,9º South and Longitude 40,2º West.
Gassendi is an impact feature located on the Near Side of the Moon, at the Northern Edge of Mare Humorum. The crater is actually much larger than the field of view visible in this image. The hills on the lower right of the mosaic are the central peak of the crater, with a height of roughly 1,2 Km. The crater almost fully visible on the top is called Gassendi A".

Dark mare lavas in the distance embay the rim and a little of the interior of Gassendi. They may have entered the crater through the narrow gap partly in shadow below the arrow. Most craters that have fractured floors are near areas of mare flooding. This suggests that the fracturing is a consequence of volcanic activity. An area next to the central peaks of Gassendi was the runnerup choice for a landing site for Apollo 17.

VB-APOLLO 16 AS 16 120-19295 HR-2.jpgAS 16-120-19295 - Gassendi "A" (HR)204 visiteForse una delle più belle immagini della Luna che siano mai state riprese durante il Programma Apollo: si tratta del Cratere Gassendi "A" e dei suoi enigmatici rilievi interni (evidenziamo i picchi plurimi e la fitta trama di canali o fratture tettoniche).
Da notare che questi canali (o fratture) formano, se li guardate attentamente, delle figure geometriche regolari e/o semi-regolari e che questo particolare ha fatto pensare (ad alcuni Discepoli del Prof. Hoagland) ad una possibile origine artificiale delle medesime le quali, ci dicono costoro, potrebbero essere i residui visibili di antichissime linee di collegamento - strade? - fra luoghi che, una volta, erano dei veri e propri agglomerati urbani - magari le mitiche "Città Lunari" di leggendaria memoria?
Che dire?
Secondo noi i Misteri della Luna sono altri (a cominciare dai TLP e dai Fast-Walkers); queste sono soltanto delle speculazioni che ci lasciano sorpresi e perplessi (soprattutto vista l'autorevole fonte dalla quale esse provengono).
