The shadow has an oval shape now but over the next few years it will become more rectangular as the planet orbits the Sun and the angle Sunlight-Rings decreases".

Atlas from Voyager 1.jpgAtlas from Voyager 2108 visiteUna "roccia vagante" (forse un KBO---->Kuiper's Belt Object) catturato da Saturno mentre si dirigeva verso l'interno del Sistema Solare? Una "cometa mancata" dunque? Nessuno può saperlo, naturalmente...
L'unica cosa che possiamo notare e stigmatizzare è l'incredibile forma di questa piccolissima Luna Saturniana la quale, a dispetto della modestia delle sue dimensioni - e forse con un pizzico di ironia... -, è stata battezzata "Atlas".

Atlas from Voyager2.jpgAtlas, from Voyager 2 (extra detail mgnf)67 visiteUn buon super detail-mgnf per evidenziare la forma (curiosa) della mini-luna Saturniana Atlas, sino ad ora mai ripresa in maniera soddisfacente dalle Sonde che sono passate (o sono tuttora in transito) nello Spazio di Saturno.
Il frame è stato portato a stretch estremi dal nostro Tecnico delle Immagini ed il risultato è più che decoroso; tuttavia, proprio perchè lo stretch estremo crea o concorre nella creazione di anomalìe ed artefatti, non commentiamo i dettagli "strani" che questo frame ora pare evidenziare.
O meglio: li commenteremo se anche Voi li vedrete e chi chiederete conto di essi...

Two differences between Atlas and Pan are obvious in this montage. Pan's Equatorial Band is much thinner and more sharply defined, and the central mass of Atlas (the part underneath the smooth Equatorial Band) appears to be smaller than that of Pan.
All of these images were taken using the Cassini Spacecraft Narrow-Angle Camera. The images of Atlas were acquired on April 12, 2017, at a distance of about 10.000 miles (approx. 16,0093 Km) and at a Sun-moons-Spacecraft angle (or Phase Angle) of 37°. All three images are oriented so that North is up".MareKromium

Atlas-N00066579.jpgAtlas...maybe...64 visiteAbbiamo delle difficoltà ad identificare con certezza quale sia l'oggetto ripreso da Cassini ma, dopo aver dato una scorsa ai nostri Archivi, riteniamo - effettuando una comparazione visuale - che l'oggetto ripreso in questo frame sia la piccola luna conosciuta come Atlas.
Se Voi avete dei dubbi o ritenete che la nostra valutazione possa essere (o sia), di fatto, errata, scriveteci e dateci una mano a risolvere il mistero.

Atlas-N00084624.jpgAtlas (1)81 visiteUna nuova (e secondo noi spettacolare, anche se segnata da innumerevoli artifacts) inquadratura della piccola luna-pastore saturniana "Atlas" la quale, nella maggior parte delle immagini Cassini, ci appare come un semplice ed insignificante puntino a ridosso dell'Anello "A" del Gigante Gassoso.
In questo frame, si distingue una regione di Atlas che appare caratterizzata da rilievi stratiformi i quali vengono a formare una sorta di montagna dall'apparenza conica e sulla cui sommità, che in questo frame è visibile proprio a ridosso del Terminatore, si intuisce l'esistenza di crepacci e, forse, di una vera e propria catena di strapiombi. Indefinibile in rilievo posto ad ore 11, sempre sulla linea del Terminatore (potrebbe essere un rilievo assimilabile ad una caldera).
Il resto di questo minuscolo mondo (dim. -> 37x34,4x27 Km), immerso nella luce del Sole, si presenta relativamente liscio - ma questo potrebbe essere un semplice effetto derivante dalla sovrasaturazione della porzione di frame che inquadra le regioni illuminate di Atlas - e molto luminoso. Da notare, tra ore 5 ed ore 6, la presenza di 2 o 3 rilievi che potrebbero essere dei crateri e, ad ore 2 e tra ore 4 ed ore 5, vediamo dei grandi bacini i quali conferiscono a questo corpo celeste l'apparente forma di un tubero.
La colorazione che abbiamo adottato (grigio/azzurra di base) è di fantasia ma, nello sceglierla, ci siamo riferiti ai colori naturali di Deimos (la Luna Marziana minore): un corpo celeste interno al quale Atlas a noi sembra assomigliare davvero parecchio.MareKromium
