Fienga/Lunar Explorer Italia/Italian Planetary Foundation)86 visiteThe NASA - Cassini Spacecraft's Imaging Scientists processed this view of Saturn's so-called "spongy" moon Hyperion, which was taken - just like yesterday's one - during a close Fly-By that occurred on May 31, 2015. This Fly-By marks the Mission's Final Close Approach to this Saturnian highly irregularly shaped moon. North on Hyperion is up and rotated 34° to the left (Sx).

The image was taken in Visible Light, with the NASA - Cassini Spacecraft's Narrow-Angle Camera - as we wrote herebefore - on May 31, 2015. The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 24.000 miles (such as about 38.624,159 Km) from Hyperion and at a Sun-Hyperion-Cassini Spacecraft, or Phase, Angle of 46°. Image scale is roughly 145 feet (such as approx. 44,196 meters) per pixel. l.

This frame (which is an Original NASA - CASSINI Spacecraft's b/w and NON Map-Projected image published on the NASA - Planetary Photojournal with the ID n. PIA 17194) has been additionally processed, contrast enhanced, magnified to help the visibility of the Surface details, Gamma corrected and then re-colorized - according to an educated guess (or, if you wish, an informed speculation) carried out by Dr Paolo C. Fienga - in Absolute Natural Colors (such as the colors that a human eye would actually perceive if someone were onboard the NASA - Cassini Spacecraft and then looked outside, towards the Saturnian moon "Hyperion"), by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team. Different colors, as well as different shades of the same color, mean, among other things, the existence of different Elements (Minerals) present on the Surface of Hyperion, each having a different Albedo (---> Reflectivity) and Chemical Composition.

Note: it is possible (but we, as IPF, have no way to be one-hundred-percent sure of such a circumstance), that the actual luminosity of Hyperion - as it is in this frame - would appear, to an average human eye, a little bit lower than it has been shown (or, better yet: interpreted) here.

The Image Scale is roughly 1180 feet (such as approx. 359,664 meters) per pixel.

This frame (which is an Original NASA - CASSINI Spacecraft's b/w and NON Map-Projected image published on the NASA - Planetary Photojournal with the ID n. PIA 17193) has been additionally processed, contrast enhanced, magnified to help the visibility of the Surface details, Gamma corrected and then re-colorized - according to an educated guess (or, if you wish, an informed speculation) carried out by Dr Paolo C. Fienga - in Absolute Natural Colors (such as the colors that a human eye would actually perceive if someone were onboard the NASA - Cassini Spacecraft and then looked outside, towards the Saturnian moon "Hyperion"), by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team. Fienga/Lunar Explorer Italia/Italian Planetary Foundation)70 visiteLocated just on the Limb (obviously, only from our point of view) of the so-called "Dwarf Planet" 1-Ceres, at about 7 o'clock of 1-Ceres' (highly uneven) disk, we can see - once again - the large Flat-Topped Mountain - about 3 miles (such as approx. 4,82802 Km) high, surrounded by (relatively) smooth Terrain - that we have already shown you in yesterday's APOD. Probably it is useless to say - but it is a good thing, in our opinion, as IPF, to underline this specific circumstance - the so-called Emission Angle here is very high. The "new" White Spot, as well as the white Material that we have noticed still in yesterday's APOD, are also clearly visible here, in this picture.

As we have already said in the past, also this specific frame is just one among the first snapshots coming from Dawn's second Mapping Orbit of 1-Ceres, which is carried out from an altitude of approx. 2700 miles (such as about 4345,218 Km). Even in this case, the Resolution is roughly 1400 feet (such as approx. 426,72 meters) per pixel.

This global portrait of the Plutonian Atmosphere was captured when the NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft was already about 1,25 Million Miles (such as approx. 2.011.675 Million KiloMeters) away from Pluto, and it shows us Atmospherical Structures (quite similar, in our opinion, as IPF, to the ones visible all around the Saturnian moon Titan) as small as roughly 12 miles (approx. 19,312 Km) across. The image, which has been received on Earth on July, 23, 2015, is displayed with the North Pole of Pluto at the top of the frame.

Fienga/Lunar Explorer Italia/Italian Planetary Foundation)67 visiteToday's APOD is an Extra Detail Magnification (or "EDM", for short) of yesterday's Contextual (or "CTX", for short) Frame, taken by the NASA - Dawn Spacecraft that shows us a small White Crater (---> also informally known as "White Spot") that is located in the Northern Hemisphere of the Dwarf Planet named 1-Ceres.

Now, we ask you one (extremely complicated, in fact) question that you, however, should try to answer: why, on 1-Ceres, the huge and deep Impact Craters do not show "White Material" inside them, while, on the other hand, the small and shallow ones (Impact Craters) do? Probably because, but we, as IPF, cannot be sure of this (just like everyone else), the White Material, in the end, does not belong to/comes from the Sub-Surface of 1-Ceres (as we thought, at the beginning), but it belongs to/comes from the Impactors. Fienga/Lunar Explorer Italia/Italian Planetary Foundation)63 visiteThis simply beautiful Contextual (or "CTX", for short) Frame, taken by the NASA - Dawn Spacecraft on August, 26, 2015, shows us, among other interesting things, an Ancient and extremely Complex Unnamed Impact Crater (which seems to be characterized by the presence of an unusually-looking - we would say, as IPF, "columnarly-shaped", maybe? - Central Peak) that is located near the Terminator Line of the Dwarf Planet named 1-Ceres.

If you will pay attention to the frame, you might agree on the fact that the long shadows - which are very well visible all over the picture - make the whole scene - with its deeply complex Surface Details - even more suggestive.

Fienga - Lunexit Team)72 visiteThe two large Impact Craters on Tethys, near the line where the day fades into the night (the so-called "Terminator Line"), almost resemble two giant eyes observing Saturn. The location of these aforementioned Impact Craters on Tethys' Terminator throws their topography into sharp relief. Both are large Impact Craters, but the larger and Southernmost of the two, shows a more complex structure.

The angle of the lighting highlights a Central Peak in this Crater. In fact, Central Peaks are the final and well visible result of the Surface (of the impacted Celestial Body) reacting to the violent Post-Impact Excavation of the Crater itself. On the other hand, the Northern Crater does not show a similar Surface Feature. Why? No one knows for sure but, possibly, the impact was too small (better yet: to small AND slow) to form a Central Peak or, maybe, the composition of the Materials located in the immediate vicinities of the Impact Area couldn't support the formation of a Central Peak. In this image, Tethys is significantly closer to the NASA - Cassini Spacecraft's Wide-Angle Camera, while the Ringed Gas-Giant Planet (---> Saturn) is in the background. And yet, the moon is still utterly dwarfed by Saturn.

This view looks toward the Anti-Saturn Side of Tethys; North is up and rotated 42° to the right (Dx). The image was taken in Visible Light with the NASA - Cassini Spacecraft's Wide-Angle Camera on April 11, 2015. The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 75.000 miles (such as about 120.700,5 Km) from Tethys and the Image Scale on Tethys is roughly 4 miles (such as about 6,437 Km) per pixel.

This frame (which is an Original NASA - CASSINI Spacecraft's b/w and NON Map-Projected image published on the NASA - Planetary Photojournal with the ID n. PIA 18318) has been additionally processed, contrast enhanced, magnified, in order to allow the vision of the slightest details of the Surface, Gamma corrected and then colorized - according to an educated guess (or, if you wish, an informed speculation) carried out by Dr Paolo C. Fienga - in Absolute Natural Colors (such as the colors that a human eye would actually perceive if someone were onboard the NASA - Cassini Spacecraft and then looked outside, toward Saturn and the Saturnian moon "Tethys"), by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team. The smooth expanse of the Icy Plains which have (so far) been informally named Sputnik Planum (watch to the right - Dx - of the picture) is flanked to the West (left - Sx) by rugged Mountains that reach up an altitude of approx. 11.000 feet (such as, roughly, 3352,8 meters), including the (even in this case, so far) informally named Norgay Montes (visible in the foreground) and the Hillary Montes, visible on the Skyline (---> Outer Edge/Horizon of Pluto). To the right (Dx), such as to the East of Sputnik Planum, some rougher (---> highly irregular) Terrain is cut by - what they appear to be - Glaciers. Furthermore, the backlighting, highlights several Layers of Haze in Pluto's tenuous - but quite uniform and highly distended - Atmosphere.

Fienga - Lunexit Team) 68 visiteThis beautiful picture is, in fact, an Image-Mosaic which has been created by using (---> putting together) several High-Resolution frames of the Dwarf-Planet Pluto, that were all sent back to Earth by the NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft in the days going from September 5 to 7, 2015. The mosaic, as you can easily see, is dominated by the bright Icy Plains which have (so far) been informally named Sputnik Planum.

However, the Image-Mosaic also features (---> shows) a tremendous variety of other (and, Geologically speaking, completely different) Landscapes that surrounds Sputnik Planum (---> such as a number of areas of Pluto which we have already shown you in the APODs of Semptember 14, 15 and 16, 2015).

The smallest visible Surface Features here are roughly 0,5 miles (such as approx. 0,80467 Km) across, and the Mosaic - in its entirety - covers a Plutonian Region that is about 1000 miles (such as, roughly, 1609,34 Km) wide. The images forming the Mosaic were taken as the NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft flew past Pluto on July 14, 2015, from a distance of about 50.000 miles (such as approx. 80.467 Km).

Fienga - Lunexit Team) 82 visiteThis Synthetic Perspective view of Pluto, based on the latest High-Resolution images to be downlinked from the NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft, shows us what you would see if you were approximately 1100 miles (such as about 1770,284 Km) above Pluto's Equatorial Area, looking North/East - over the dark/orangish and heavily cratered Region informally named Cthulhu Regio - toward the bright, smooth, expanse of Icy Plains which have, for now, been informally called Sputnik Planum.

The entire expanse of Terrain seen in this image is roughly 1100 miles (such as about 1770,284 Km ) across. The images were taken as the NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft flew past Pluto on July 14, 2015, from a distance of about 50.000 miles (such as approx. 80.467 Km).

The image (which is an Original NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft's b/w and NON Map-Projected frame published on the NASA - Planetary Photojournal with the ID n. PIA 19937) has been additionally processed, magnified to aid the visibility of the details, contrast enhanced and sharpened, Gamma corrected and then colorized (according to an educated guess carried out by Dr Paolo C. Fienga-LXTT-IPF) in Absolute Natural Colors (such as the colors that a normal human eye would actually perceive if someone were onboard the NASA - New Horizons Spacecraft and then looked ahead, towards the Dwarf-Planet Pluto), by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team.
