It was the first time that sun rays, also known as crepuscular rays, have been viewed so clearly on Mars. Crepuscular is taken from the Latin word for “Twilight,†as these rays appear near Sunset or Sunrise.
These clouds were captured as part of a follow-on imaging campaign to study noctilucent, or "night-shining" clouds, which started in 2021. While most Martian clouds hover no more than 37 miles (60 kilometers) above the ground and are composed of water-ice, these clouds appear to be higher in elevation, where it’s very cold. That suggests these clouds are made of carbon dioxide, or dry ice.

The_Tower-1.jpgA new "Monolith-like Structure" on Mars...119 visiteWith thousands of images taken by various probes sent to Mars, it would seem inevitable that unusual or puzzling objects might be seen in some of them. And of course, there have been, most notably the famous “Face on Mars” first seen in low-resolution Viking Orbiter images in the 1970s. Higher-resolution images taken later by other orbiters with better cameras showed it, and nearby interesting formations, to be just natural hills and mesas. Despite that, other curious things are seen in both orbital and ground images from time to time, although they almost always have a simple prosaic explanation. Another such oddity was seen in an image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), which has attracted some attention. Most likely it is a natural rock formation, but it’s also not, as described by the tabloid Daily Mail, a “spherule” either.
The image shows a bright object casting a long shadow across the Floor of what might be a dried-up lakebed. Some observers have said it might be a Tower (or "Spire"), judging by the long shadow, but the view is from directly above and not enough detail can be seen on the object itself. The object does stand out for its brightness, but little more can be said about it. Using Occam’s Razor, it is most likely a natural geological rock formation, and not an alien tower, but it also can’t be a round “spherule” as referred to. The spherules seen by the Opportunity and Curiosity rovers are tiny, only a few millimeters across, way, way too small to be seen from orbit. If at all sphere-shaped, it is much bigger than that. H-Elon_Musk.jpgBeware of Mr Elon...244 visiteQuando iniziò a "guardare al Cielo" e la Sua "Space-X" apparve, nel 2002, su una Rivista Americana che leggevo con grande interesse (Popular Mechanics), intuii che quel "Ragazzo" avrebbe fatto grandi cose.
Aveva una "Visione", un entusiasmo accattivante, un indubitabile "Senso del Cosmo" e, cosa che non guasta, risorse finanziarie quasi illimitate. Poteva fallire, poteva buttar via miliardi di USD, poteva far fiasco ed invece, con mia grande gioia, ce l'ha fatta (o, almeno, così sembra). Sarà stata la fama, esplosa quasi all'improvviso; saranno stati i complimenti, figli del successo, sarà che nella Vita si cambia: chi può saperlo? Ma il fatto era e rimane uno: quel "Ragazzo" che aveva una Visione non lo trovo più. Mi sembra, addirittura, che non sia mai esistito.
Ora è rimasto solo un "Divoratore", un uomo che si nutre del suo successo e che inizia a dar segni "strani".
C'è chi, in lui, vede un narcisista maligno, chi un "Paperone dello Spazio", chi uno che pensa di essere diventato una sorta di Dio. Io, non so esattamente che cosa pensare, ma una cosa è certa: continuo a seguirlo, con interesse, ma non lo riconosco più. Sembra fuori controllo. Leggo le sue esternazioni, mi documento sulle sue idee ed intuizioni, ma vedo sempre più megalomania e sempre meno "Visione". Sarà (anche) lui a riportarci sulla Luna ed oltre? Non so. Ma, onestamente parlando (scrivendo), oggi come oggi, spero proprio di no. Non incarna lo Spirito degli Apollo Days (proprio per nulla) e mi sembra impegnato solo a cercare di far parlare di sé e di quello che farà e comprerà.
Oggi, io ho paura di gente come lui: spero di sbagliare, ma temo che sia ormai una scheggia impazzita o un bambino ricchissimo che vuol giocare a fare la Storia a spese di chi la Storia la dovrà raccontare.
