When CMEs, enormous clouds of energetic particles ejected from the Sun, slam into Earth's magnetosphere, they often trigger auroral displays.
But in this case, the collison carried the tail of the comet away.
The tail was likely ripped off by interacting magnetic fields rather than the mechanical pressure of the collision.
This a GIF-movie showing the remarkable event as recorded by the Heliospheric Imager onboard the STEREO A spacecraft. In the movie, the time between frames is about 45 minutes, while the frames span about 14x20 MKM at the distance of the comet. Of course, similar collisions have happened before as the ancient comet loops through its 3,3 year solar orbit. So don't worry, Encke's tail will grow back!".

In fact, sightings of the meteor, as bright as the Full Moon, were widely reported throughout the Netherlands and Germany at approximately 17:00 UT. Accompanied by sonic booms and rumbling sounds, the meteor was seen to break up into bright fragments, eventually leaving a persistent smoke-like trail.
Even though there are bright fireball meteors in planet Earth's Atmosphere every day, sightings of them are relatively rare because they more often occur over oceans and uninhabited areas".

The answer to last week's sky mystery turned out to be orbiting and expanding debris from the upper stage of a failed Russian rocket that exploded unexpectedly. The cloud became visible to unaided southern hemisphere observers, and its cause was initially unknown. The above time lapse movie shows the cloud drifting as seen from Australia. Streaks in and near the cloud are likely large pieces of debris. The debris cloud is more than an astronomical curiosity -- particles from this cloud and others could become projectiles damaging existing satellites. As the cloud disperses, many particles will fall to Earth, but many more may help make low Earth orbit an increasingly hostile environment".

Certo, la cometina Pojmanski non aveva - forse - i numeri giusti per entrare nell'Albo delle (cosiddette) Grandi Comete, ma certo è che i media (TUTTI!) se ne sono guardati bene dal pubblicizzarla. E la NASA? Leggerete Voi stessi le scarne note prodotte al riguardo nel "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 6 Marzo 2006. Noi, nel nostro piccolo, dato che ci meravigliamo per niente, siamo andati in cerca di fotografie di questa cometa ed abbiamo "scoperto" una straordinaria somiglianza fra C/2006 A1 (la Pojmanski Comet appunto) e la C/2004 Q2 (meglio nota come Machholz Comet). Uguale tipologia - o classe visuale - di appartenenza (nucleo sferico e chioma filiforme) e, soprattutto, uguale colore (ergo uguale - o comunque molto simile - composizione chimica). Deduzione logica: si tratta di "Sister-Comets". Domanda: ci sono altre "sorelle" in arrivo?!?

Right now, however, a new comet has brightened unexpectedly and is visible as a faint streak to the unaided northern observer in the eastern morning sky just before sunrise. Binoculars may help. Comet Pojmanski, officially designated C/2006 A1 and discovered only in January, now sports a turquoise tail several times longer than the full moon. Comet Pojmanski's ion tail is due to gas particles expelled by the comet being pushed away from the Sun by the solar wind, the same wind that ionizes gas in the tail causing its blue tint. Pictured above as it appeared only last week, Comet Pojmanski has now begun to fade as its orbit around the Sun takes it further from the Earth.

As the first known object of its type, Oumuamua presented a unique case for the International Astronomical Union (IAU, for short), which assigns designations for astronomical objects. Originally classified as comet C/2017 U1, it was later reclassified as Asteroid A/2017 U1, due to the absence of a coma (--> "Chioma", in Italian).

Once it was unambiguously identified as coming from outside the Solar System, a new designation was created.

The name comes from the Hawaiian word "oumuamua", meaning 'scout' (from ou, meaning 'reach out for', and mua, reduplicated for emphasis, meaning 'first, in advance of', and reflects the way this object is like a scout or messenger sent from the distant past to reach out to Humanity.

It roughly translates to 'first distant messenger' (or "The First Messenger from the distance").

Before the official name was decided upon, the name "Rama" was suggested by the name given to an Alien Spacecraft discovered under similar circumstances in the 1973 science fiction novel "Rendezvous with Rama", by Sir Arthur C. Clarke.
