29-Farside-Luna3.jpgThe Far-Side of the Moon from "Luna 3" (the best picture)54 visiteCaption NASA originale:"This view shows the far side at right and the near side making up about one-third of the image at left. The circular dark patch below and left of center is mare Smythii, on the boundary between the near and far sides. Just above this is Mare Marginus. The dark circle at upper right is Mare Moscoviense and at lower right is the crater Tsiolkovskiy with its light central peak. The image is centered at 10° N, 110° E; North is at 11:30 (Luna 3-phc7)".

29-G-Surveyor6_full.jpgSurveyor 6 - Panorama134 visiteOriginal caption:"This panorama of the cratered lunar surface was constructed from images returned by the US Surveyor 6 lander.
Surveyor 6 was not the first spacecraft to accomplish a soft landing on the Moon ... but it was the first to land and then lift off again! After the spacecraft touched down near the center of the Moon's nearside in November of 1967, NASA controllers commanded it to hop. Briefly firing its rocket engine and lifting itself some 4 mt above the surface, the Surveyor moved about 2,5 meters to one side before setting down again. The hopping success of Surveyor 6 essentially marked the completion of the Surveyor series main mission - to determine if the lunar terrain was safe for the planned Apollo landings".

30-Tycho-S7.jpgTycho Crater from Surveyor 7 Lander135 visiteCaption NASA originale:"Surveyor 7 mosaic of the rim area of Tycho from the highland region, north of the Crater. Surveyor 7 landed 10 January 1969 at 40.88° S, 11.45° W and took about 21.000 photos over a month, some of which were used to make up this mosaic. The block in the foreground is about half a meter across and the crater is about 1,5 meters in diameter. The hills on the horizon are about 13 Km away (Surveyor 7, 68-H-40)".

The area photographed is centered at 13° S, 10° W and covers about 360 Km from top to bottom. The large crater at center right is the 108 Km diameter Alphonsus. Above it is Ptolemaeus and below it Arzachel. The terminator is at the bottom right corner. Mare Nubium is at center and left. North is at about 11:00 at the center of the frame. The Ranger 7 impact site is off the frame, to the left of the upper left corner (Ranger 7, B001)".

Ranger 7 was the first U.S. spacecraft to successfully transmit images of the Lunar Surface back to Earth. This image was taken 17,2 minutes before impact from a distance of 2158 km. North is at 12:30. Mare Nubium is at lower right and Mare Humorum at lower left. The image is centered at 13° S, 330° E and is about 950 Km across. The Ranger 7 impact site, at 10.7° S, 339.3° E, is at the center of the upper right quadrant, in Mare Cognitum. Landsberg Crater is against the top of the frame at center, and the 60 Km diameter Bullialdus Crater is just below and right of center, partly obscured by a hash mark (Ranger 7, A001)".

These image were taken by the number 1 and 3 P-channel cameras at 0.39 and 0.19 seconds before impact from an altitude of 1070 and 519 meters, respectively. The pictures are cut off because the spacecraft impacted the surface before completing the transmission. The top image was taken by the P3 camera and the bottom image by P1.
