Dust in the wind, dust in the air...

Caption NASA originale:"This plot shows the estimated change in dust levels from 12/2003 to 01/2004 at Gusaev Crater (red curve) and Meridiani Planum (black curve). The measurements, retrieved from MGS's Thermal Emission Spectrometer, indicate that a large regional dust storm beginning in mid-December raised significant dust near Meridiani. Smaller amounts of dust were spread globally by winds, the effects of which were seen at Gusaev Crater. For exemple: a dust optical depth value of 1.0 would correspond to a very smoggy day in Los Angeles or Houston and a value of 0.1 to a relatively clear day in Los Angeles".

Nota: le stime fatte dallo Spettrometro a bordo della Sonda MGS si sono rivelate errate: lo dicono i fatti. Nonostante il dust-sturm della metà di Dicembre 2003, infatti, il Rover Opportunity - Area Meridiani - è rimasto estremamente pulito. Spirit, invece, si è "sporcato" di più, ma ci hanno pensato i Dust Devils a ripulirlo. Inoltre, come dimostrano le migliaia di foto proposte, l’atmosfera di Marte è sostanzialmente sgombra da polveri (e la nitidezza delle immagini mattutine e serali – queste ultime soprattutto –, lo dimostra ampiamente).
