"Mars and His Moons") a proposito della Missione "Phobos-2", una missione ambiziosa, coronata da un successo parziale, e che giunse davvero ad un soffio dal coronare il suo più grande obbietivo: far posare un Lander sulla superficie di Phobos, la "Luna della Paura".
Come leggerete, non tutto andò per il verso giusto, ma le immagini che ci arrivarono da Phobos-2 ancora costituiscono, per molti Ricercatori ed Appassionati, un autentico "must": sia perchè la forma di Phobos che appare dai frames Phobos-2 NON si sposa alla perfezione con quello che ci ha mostrato la Sonda USA "Mars Global Surveyor", sia perchè, secondo alcuni Ufologi, "qualcosa accadde" proprio mentre Phobos-2 si avvicinava alla Luna Marziana per "depositare" il suo Lander.
Ma andiamo per ordine, e cominciamo con l'esaminare 4 frames orbitali che ci mostrano la Regione di Tharsis e la Valles Marineris in due diversi momenti del giorno Marziano.

These were very similar to cameras later flown on Venera-9 and 10 Orbiters, but one of the Mars versions had a photomultiplier tube sensitive to infrared.
Apparently, no infrared panoramas were received from Mars-4 or Mars-5.

During its flyby - on February 10, 1974 -, it returned 12 photographs from the 52mm "Vega" phototelevision camera, all through the red filter. It also returned 2 panoramas from the optical-mechanical cameras. Image data was returned digitally by pulse position modulation.

Just "bad signal"...94 visiteA descent vehicle released by Mars-3 became the first probe to land on Mars, but it only operated for about 20 seconds, returning some data and 79 scan lines of video. The image below right is reported to be a view of that signal. It should probably be rotated 90° since the Mars-3 cameras were of the same cycloramic design as Luna-9, scanning vertically.
After extensive analysis, Soviet Scientists reported that it contains no information and it is not likely a view of the Martian horizon as some people have suggested.

Phobos2-C_Fobos_06.jpgPhobos, from Phobos-2 (6)141 visiteIl frame "famoso" è il numero (9) della sequenza, e la fama deriva dal dettaglio visibile in basso a Sx: una striscia di luce che "sembrava" essere l'evidenza di un oggetto luminoso il quale si stava muovendo rapidamente in direzione di Phobos. Noi crediamo che quella striscia (già visibile, sia pure più piccola, in altri frames - mentre in questo essa arriva a "tagliare", addirittura, l'intera immagine) sia un vizio del frame il quale può essere attribuito ad un errore nella trasmissione dei dati da Phobos-2 a Terra. D'altro canto, se proprio vogliamo andare a "pescare nei più piccoli dettagli", allora Vi suggeriamo di chiederVi che cosa sìano mai quei disegnini (altri photo-artifacts? Annotazioni digitali?...) che abbiamo cerchiato in bianco...

Termoskan and VSK raw image data from Phobos-2 was published by the National Space Science Data Center.

Additional work was needed to correct spurious data in Channel 1 (causing the jagged misalignment of some scanlines). This may not be possible using NASA's copy of the data, which has parity bits removed. IKI performed additional processing in the frequency domain to remove periodic noise and replace bad pixels and scanlines with local median values.
White pixels appearing in columns 228-231 of the channel-3 CCD are caused by a fault in the electronics, but gained notoriety when misidentified by UFO experts as an Alien Spacecraft.
