OldAgeAstronomy.jpgMedieval Astronomy from the "Melk Abbey"57 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 17 Aprile 2009:"Discovered by accident, this manuscript page provides graphical insight to astronomy in medieval times, before the Renaissance and the influence of Nicolaus Copernicus, Tycho de Brahe, Johannes Kepler, and Galileo.
The intriguing page is from the lecture notes on astronomy compiled by the monk Magister Wolfgang de Styria before the year 1490 at Melk Abbey in Austria.
The top panels clearly illustrate the necessary geometry for a lunar (left) and solar eclipse in the Earth-centered Ptolemaic system.
At lower left is a diagram of the Ptolemaic view of the solar system and at the lower right is a chart to calculate the date of Easter Sunday in the Julian calendar.
Text at the upper right explains the movement of the planets according to the Ptolemaic system.
The actual manuscript page is on view at historic Melk Abbey as part of a special exhibition during the International Year of Astronomy".MareKromium (5 voti)

Lenticular_Clouds.jpgLenticular Clouds' Cluster80 visiteCaption NASA:"Are those UFOs near that mountain?
No! They are Multilayered Lenticular Clouds.
Moist air forced to flow upward around mountain tops can create lenticular clouds. Water droplets condense from moist air cooled below the dew point, and clouds are opaque groups of water droplets. Waves in the air that would normally be seen horizontally can then be seen vertically, by the different levels where clouds form.
On some days the city of Seattle, Washington, USA, is treated to an usual sky show when lenticular clouds form near Mt. Rainier, a large mountain that looms just under 100 Km South-Eeast of the city.
This image of a spectacular cluster of lenticular clouds was taken last December (2008)".MareKromium (5 voti)

Hoodoos.jpgHoodoos62 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day", del giorno 3 Luglio 2008:"The strange-looking rock formations in the foreground of this skyscape are called "Hoodoos".
Towers of weathered, eroded sedimentary rock, Hoodoos are found in arid regions of planet Earth and are particularly abundant in an area known as Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah, USA.
The more familiar night sky pictured here was recorded early Monday morning and includes bright star Capella, alpha star of the constellation Auriga, left of center.
On the far right, a very over exposed crescent Moon dominates the sky in close conjunction with the sister stars of the Pleiades Cluster. The curious shapes of the two tall, illuminated Hoodoos suggest their popular monikers: Thor's Hammer (right) and The Temple of Osiris".
- Artifacts"?
Pensateci sopra...MareKromium (5 voti)

MareKromium (4 voti)
