EOD.jpg

Solar_Green-Flash.jpg
Solar_Green-Flash.jpgA "Green Flash" from the Sun89 visiteDalla Rubrica "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 4 Gennaio 2011:"Many people think it is just a myth. Others think it is true but its cause isn't yet known. Adventurers pride themselves on having seen it.
What is it?
It's a "Green Flash" from the Sun. The truth is the Green Flash does exist and its cause is well understood.

Just as the setting Sun disappears completely from view, a last glimmer appears startlingly green.
The effect is typically visible only from locations with a low, distant horizon, and lasts just a few seconds. A Green Flash is also visible for a rising Sun, but takes better timing to spot.

A dramatic Green Flash, as well as an even more rare Blue Flash, was caught in the above photograph recently observed during a Sunset visible from Teide Observatory at Tenerife, Cannary Islands, Spain.
Obviously, the Sun does not partly turn either green or blue: the effect is caused by different layers of the Earth's Atmosphere, together acting like a prism".

Retrograde_Mars-TT-2010.jpg
Retrograde_Mars-TT-2010.jpgRetrograde Mars60 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 13 Giugno 2010:"Why would Mars appear to move backwards? Most of the time, the apparent motion of Mars in Earth's Sky is in one direction, slow but steady in front of the far distant stars. About every two years, however, the Earth passes Mars as they orbit around the Sun. During the most recent such pass late last year and early this year, Mars as usual, loomed large and bright.
Also during this time, Mars appeared to move backwards in the sky, a phenomenon called "Retrograde Motion".
Pictured above is a series of images digitally stacked so that all of the stars images coincide. Here, Mars appears to trace out a loop in the sky. At the center of the loop, Earth passed Mars and the retrograde motion was the highest. Retrograde Motion can also be seen for other Planets of the Solar System".

Eyjafjallajökull-Fulle.jpg
Eyjafjallajökull-Fulle.jpgNight over Eyjafjallajökull (credits: Marco Fulle - Stromboli Online) 58 visiteWhy did the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland create so much ash? Although the large ash plume was not unparalleled in its abundance, its location was particularly noticeable because it drifted across such well populated areas.

The Eyjafjallajökull Volcano in southern Iceland began erupting on March 20, with a second eruption starting under the center of a small glacier on April 14, 2010. Neither eruption was unusually powerful. The second eruption, however, melted a large amount of glacial ice which then cooled and fragmented lava into gritty glass particles that were carried up with the rising Volcanic Plume.
Pictured above, lightning bolts illuminate ash pouring out of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano.

Earth.pngMother Earth58 visiteDalla Rubrica "NASA - Picture of the Day", del giorno 23 Novembre 2009:"Goodbye Earth!
Earlier this month, ESA's interplanetary Rosetta Spacecraft zoomed past the Earth on its way back across the Solar System.
Pictured above, Earth showed a bright crescent phase featuring the South Pole to the passing rocket ship. Launched from Earth in 2004, Rosetta used the gravity of the Earth to help propel it out past Mars and toward a 2014 rendezvous with Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
Last year, the Robot Spacecraft passed asteroid 2867 Steins, and next year it is scheduled to pass enigmatic asteroid 21 Lutetia. If all goes well, Rosetta will release a probe that will land on the 15-Km diameter comet in 2014".

FaithFullMoon090409_westlake.jpgObscuring the Moon...58 visiteCaption NASA:"October's bright Full Moon is also known as the "Harvest Moon".
Traditionally, the Harvest Moon is the Full Moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox. But in this snapshot, the Full Moon could be called the "Old Faith-Full Moon".
Taken on September 4, 2009, the picture combines the regularly occurring lunar phase with Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, named for its dependable eruptions.
Shining on the well-known geyser's towering pillar from behind, the moonlight creates an eerie halo surrounding convoluted shapes.
Faithfully, the Full Moon itself is bright enough to be seen through the dense swirling steam near the top".
