It would be nice to present a folio of color pictures with the unqualified comment that these are the (Real) "Colors of Mars". But, after more than a year (many more, now) of analysis, it becomes clear that the situation will never become so simple.
In order to correct for the out of band spectral leaks in the color filters within the camera it is necessary to have access to both a color and an infrared (JR) picture taken at the same time. Only in that way can the IR contributions to the visible color, a result of camera filter design, be assessed.
For the many color pictures taken without an IR companion detailed calibration is not possible. Instead, the three visible channels-blue, green, and red-are balanced on the assumption that there are no out of band contributions..." (continua)

These were previously released in May 2005, but the MOC team felt that 20 July 2006 is an appropriate time to review this story.
The 1st figure (1) visually tells how the Lander was found. The initial observations of the location of Viking 1, as originally determined by members of the Viking science team based on sightlines to various crater rims seen in the Lander images (black lines), did not show the detailed features we knew from the Lander pictures (2) to be in the area.
Using geodetic measurements, the late Merton Davies of the RAND Corporation, a MGS-MOC Co-Investigator, suggested that we should image areas to the East and North of where Viking 1 was thought to be. Timothy J. Parker of the JPL (Pasadena, California), using sightlines to crater rims seen in the Lander images (white lines), deduced a location very close to that suggested by Davies".

QC-VikingOne-The_B-Rock-PIA00386-EB01.jpgThe "B-Rock" (RAW Original Frame + EDM; credits: Elisabetta Bonora)83 visiteEd ecco quindi, una volta che si è passati dall'inset del Corsera all'osservazione del RAW-Frame Viking One Originale, che la nostra "lettera B" (con il "2" e la "C" che svaniscono nel nulla...) si risolve piuttosto chiaramente in un effetto di pareidolìa il quale venne creato, artifici e raggiri a parte, dalla presenza, sulla roccia misteriosa, di una serie di scanalature curvilinee (peraltro comuni su innumerevoli rocce presenti nell'area di Landing della Sonda).
Scanalature, tra l'altro, profonde (probabilmente) almeno un paio di centimetri e quindi capaci di generare delle ombre che, di fatto evidenziando i margini dei piccoli solchi in questione, furono causa di ulteriori ed estremamente ingannevoli effetti visivi (e comunque, volendo fare i "Pignoli", diciamo che al di sopra della lettera "B" - e tralasciando l'inesistente "2" e la "C", si può ben distinguere una sorta di "8"...).
Che altro aggiungere? Complimenti e congratulazioni ad Elisabetta e "Mistero" risolto!MareKromium

"Manny")125 visiteOgni promessa è debito: ecco quindi il bellissimo (ed assai intrigante) GIF-Movie realizzato dal Sig. Manny, il quale ci mostra che anche dalle parti del Viking Lander n. 2, "qualcosa" si muoveva tra rocce e dune.
Una prova ulteriore (sebbene, purtroppo, ad affidabilità relativa a causa della scarsissima qualità dei frames impiegati - ma per noi va bene lo stesso), del fatto che, nonostante il silenzio dei Ragazzi di Pasadena, il muto scetticismo del Gotha Mondiale degli "Esperti" di Scienze Planetarie ed Eso-Biologia e l'indifferenza (unita ad ilarità vera e propria) dei vecchi (o vecchissimi...) guitti da laboratorio (o da Osservatorio Astronomico) di "casa nostra", sulla Superficie del Pianeta Rosso sono AGEVOLMENTE RISCONTRABILI e VERIFICABILI DEI MOVIMENTI.
Movimenti, sia detto con chiarezza, che non sono indici necessari della presenza/esistenza di Entità Biologiche o Bio-magnetiche Locali (in realtà ci potrebbero essere altre spiegazioni, altrettanto valide - ma che, per adesso, ci teniamo in tasca...), ma che COMUNQUE ESISTONO e, a nostro modo di vedere, andrebbero, se non altro, STUDIATI con un minimo di serietà e di attenzione.
Una serietà ed attenzione che, eccezion fatta per Lunar Explorer Italia e qualche altro sparuto Ricercatore Solitario, onestamente non riusciamo a vedere.
Complimenti, sinceri e di cuore, al Sig. "Manny", per aver fornito un eccellente tassello ulteriore al mosaico che Lunar Explorer Italia sta costruendo da anni. MareKromium
