OPP-SOL956-PIA09170-1.gifClouds over Meridiani - Sol 956 (GIF-Movie)54 visiteNASA's MER Opportunity captured a view of wispy afternoon clouds, not unlike fair weather clouds on Earth, passing overhead on the Rover's 956th Sol (such as Oct. 2, 2006). With Opportunity facing North-East, the clouds appear to drift gently toward the West in this movie taken with the Rover's NavCam.
The 10 frames, taken 32" apart, show the formation and evolution of what are likely mid-level, convective water clouds. Such clouds are common near Mars' Equator at this time of the Martian year. They have been observed by both of NASA's MER, by satellites orbiting Mars and by the HST. In this case, the clouds appear to develop at a fixed location, in the center of the frame about 25° above the horizon. This style of origin suggests that a thermal plume is rising over a surface feature. In spite of apparent winds aloft, the thermal plume appears to remain stationary for the whole duration of the movie.
Though scientists have determined from the images that the wind bearing is East/North-East, approximately 80°, it is not possible on the basis of the movie to unambiguously determine the height and speed of the clouds. Scientists estimate, based on models of atmospheric wind profiles and the apparent displacement of the clouds, that all of the clouds in the movie are at about the same height somewhere between 5 and 25 Km (about 3 to 20 miles) above the surface. The clouds are estimated to be moving at 2,5 mt per second, if they are low, to 12,5 mt per second, if they are high (8 to 41 feet per second).

SOL497-Gusev_Crater8-PIA04179.jpgGusev Crater's Horizon - Soles 497/500 (Approximate True Colors; credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech)73 visiteOrmai, come Lettori di Lunar Explorer, avrete compreso che la nostra fissazione sui "Colori di Marte" trascende la problematica in sè ed arriva a toccare i tasti, molto più delicati, della "coerenza" e della "omogeneità". Coerenza (di ipotesi ed elementi circostanziali) ed Omogeneità (di dati ed informazioni di contorno) che la NASA, purtroppo - riguardo ai MER e ad altre precedenti Missioni verso il Red Planet -, non riesce proprio più a dare.
Qualcuno potrebbe pensare alla mala-fede ed al cover-up; qualche altro, magari, ad una sorta di incompetenza. A noi, in fondo, piace pensare che questo "caos cromatico" che coinvolge Marte (e, con esso, quasi tutta la fotografia spaziale) dipenda dal fatto che:
in 1mo luogo, la Verità, come ovvio, non la conosce ancora nessuno;
in 2do luogo i dati che abbiamo sono ancora insufficienti (e, forse, in parte anche fra loro contraddittori);
in 3zo luogo - ed infine - alcune informazioni, per essere valide, devono essere acquisite "da occhi umani".
Voi che dite?!?

SOL497-Gusev_Crater3-PIA04179.jpgGusev Crater's Horizon - Soles 497/500 (Approximate True Colors; credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech)60 visiteForse è una conseguenza del fatto che questo panorama gigantesco è stato ottenuto combinando le immagini di 5 Soles, o forse è solo una nostra impressione ma, a differenza del bellissimo paesaggio relativo al Sol 519 di Spirit, questa serie di sezioni - che, insieme, formano il "Whale Panorama" - ci sembrano ancora una volta peccare di realismo. Il cielo, in particolare, è davvero improbabile e tutta la superficie di Marte, più che rossa o arancione - come appare nei frames in true colors ("colori veri" o "approssimativamente veri" a detta della NASA, badate bene...) i quali ora mostravano target ravvicinati (tipo Adirondack) ora panorami (tipo Bonneville Crater e Santa Anita) -, sembra essere diventata verdastra.
Premesso che ognuno deve fare le proprie valutazioni noi, per coerenza, non possiamo far altro che stigmatizzare ancora la scarsa attendibilità di questa visione di Marte con quello che la NASA stessa, in altri casi, ha detto essere i 'veri' (o quasi) colori del Pianeta Rosso (o presunto tale)...
