ZZ-ZZ-Nhov20071201_0488.jpgWhere's New Horizons? December 2007 (2) - Full Trajectory: Overhead View54 visiteThis image shows New Horizons' current position along its full planned trajectory. The green segment of the line shows where New Horizons has traveled since launch; the red indicates the spacecraft's future path.
Positions of stars with magnitude 12 or brighter are shown from this perspective, which is above the Sun and "North" of Earth's orbit.

ZZ-Pluto-PIA09234.gifPluto! From New Horizons (GIF-Movie)55 visiteCaption NASA:"The Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) on New Horizons acquired images of the Pluto field 3 days apart in late September 2006, in order to see Pluto's motion against a dense background of stars. LORRI took 3 frames at 1-second exposures on both Sept. 21 and Sept. 24.
Because it moved along its predicted path, Pluto was detected in all six images.

These images are displayed using false-color to represent different intensities: the lowest intensity level is black, different shades of red mark intermediate intensities, and the highest intensity is white. The images appear pixilated because they were obtained in a mode that compensates for the drift in spacecraft pointing over long exposure times. LORRI also made these observations before operators uploaded new flight-control software in October; the upgraded software package includes an optical navigation capability that will make LORRI approximately three times more sensitive still than for these Pluto observations".

ZZ-New_Horizons-01.jpgOn the way to Pluto: the passing of Mars (2)54 visiteCaption NASA:"New Horizons' trailblazing journey to the Solar System's outermost frontier took it past the orbit of Mars at 6 a.m. EDT (1000 UTC) on April 7, 2006 - 78 days after the spacecraft launched.

At the time, because of Mars' position in its orbit, New Horizons was actually closer to Earth than to Mars - just 93,5 MKM (58,1 MMs) from home, compared to 299 MKM (186 MMs) from the Red Planet. Speeding away from the Sun at 21 Km (about 13 miles) per second, the spacecraft crossed Mars' path some 243 MKM (about 151 MMs) from the Sun - close to the farthest point in Mars' elliptical 687-day orbit".

Indovinate quale...

ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-Pluto-Surface.jpg
ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-Pluto-Surface.jpgUnusually-looking Surface Features along the Plutonian Terminator82 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" del 16 Luglio 2015.

"An about 50 miles (such as approx. 80 Km) trip across Pluto would cover the distance indicated by the scale bar in this startling image.
The close-up of the icy world's rugged Equatorial Terrain was captured when the New Horizons Spacecraft was about 47.800 miles (approx. 77.000 Km) from the Surface, 1,5 hours (i.e.: 90 minutes) before its closest approach.

Rising to an estimated 11.000 feet (about 3500 meters), the Mountains visible here are likely composed of (mostly - added by Lunexit) Water Ice.

Suggesting surprising geological activity, they are also likely young with an estimated age of about 100 MY (Million Years). This speculation is based on the apparent absence of "fresh" Impact Craters.

The area pictured is near the base of Pluto's broad, bright and heart-shaped Region".

ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-Z-Pluto-h-Plutonian_Moons-HST-1280.jpgPlutonian Moons: Kerberos and Styx (Cerbero e Stige)67 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" dell'8 Luglio 2013.

"Pluto's newly discovered moons now have names.
Known previously as P4 and P5, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has now given the fourth and fifth discovered moons of Pluto the names Kerberos and Styx.
The small moons were discovered in 2011 and 2012 by the Hubble Space Telescope in preparation for the close passing of the New Horizons Spacecraft by Pluto in 2015.

Kerberos is named after the many headed dog in Greek mythology that guards the entrance to the so-called "Underworld" (Hell?!?), while Styx is named after the goddess who overlooks the mythological river that runs between the Earth and the Underworld.

Both monikers are related to the name of Pluto, who rules the mythical Region. Because their reflectivity is unknown, the size of each moon is quite uncertain - but each is crudely estimated to be about 20 Km in diameter.

The robotic New Horizons Spacecraft is on schedule to pass by Pluto in 2015 and it will provide the first clear images of the dwarf planet and its companions".

ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-ZZ-Z-New_Horizons_-_Map.pngIn the Kuiper's Belt...67 visiteSfuggire nell'Infinito "Oltre": ecco la "Missione" di New Horizons.

"Pluto is coming into focus. As the robotic New Horizons Spacecraft bears down on this unexplored world of the distant Solar System, new Features on its Surface are becoming evident.

In the displayed image, an unusual polygonal structure roughly 200 Km wide is visible on the left (Sx) while, just below it, a relatively complex Terrain runs diagonally across the "Dwarf Planet".

New Horizon's images and data on these structures will likely be studied for years to come in an effort to better understand the Geologic History of Pluto and our Solar System. After suffering a troublesome glitch last week, New Horizons will make its historic Fly-By of Pluto and its moons on Tuesday".

Tutto passato. Tutto ok. Ed il Viaggio continua.....
