Rhea-N00043271.jpgApproaching Rhea (2)57 visiteIn the outpost of the Saturn System the moon Rhea waits for the Cassini spacecraft. On Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, the spacecraft will come within 500 Km (about 310 miles) of its surface. Rhea's cratered surface looks in some ways similar to our own Moon, or the planet Mercury. But make no mistake: Rhea's icy exterior would quickly melt if this moon were brought as close to the Sun as Mercury.
N00043271.jpg was taken on November 26, 2005, and received on Earth on November 27, 2005. The camera was pointing toward Rhea that, at the time, was distant approximately 172.530 Km from the spaceship. The image was taken using the UV1 and CL2 filters. (3 voti)

Japetus-N00042868.jpgApproaching Japetus (over-exposed)57 visiteOriginal caption:"N00042868.jpg was taken on November 11, 2005 and received on Earth November 11, 2005. The camera was pointing toward Japetus at approx. 480.167 Km away, and the image was taken using the CL1 and CL2 filters".
(3 voti)

Dione-PIA07618.jpgCanyonland74 visiteOriginal caption:"The Cassini spacecraft views the far-off wispy canyons of Saturn's moon Dione and sees an interesting dichotomy between the bright wisps and the bright South Polar Region at the bottom. The view looks toward the trailing hemisphere on Dione. North is up.
The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft's narrow-angle camera on Sept. 20, 2005, through a filter combination sensitive to polarized green light. The image was acquired at a distance of approx. 2,1 MKM (about 1,3 MMs) from Dione and at a Sun-Dione-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 64°. Resolution in the original image was 12 Km per pixel. The image has been magnified by a factor of two to aid visibility".
Nota: un'immagine "modesta" di Dione, ripresa da una grande distanza e che - stranamente - evidenzia davvero molto bene la "profondità" dei rilievi Dioniani. Curioso, trattandosi di un frame NON 3D. (3 voti)

The Rings-PIA07610.jpgClose look at the "B-Ring"55 visiteOriginal caption:"This detailed view of Saturn's mid-B ring shows intriguing structure, the cause of which has yet to be explained by ring scientists. The image shows a radial location located between approx. 107.200 to 115.700 Km (about 66.600 to 71.900 miles) from Saturn.
The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Sept. 3, 2005, at a distance of approx. 1,1 MKM (roughly 700.000 miles) from Saturn using a filter sensitive to wavelengths of infrared light centered at 752 nnmts. The image scale is 6 Km (about 4 miles) per pixel". (3 voti)
