30 Doradus.jpg30-Doradus and the Tarantula Nebula123 visiteFirst cataloged as a star, 30 Doradus is actually an immense Star Forming Region in nearby galaxy "The Large Magellanic Cloud". The Region's spidery appearance is responsible for its popular name, the Tarantula Nebula, except that this tarantula is about 1000 LY across, and 180.000 LY away in the Southern Constellation "Dorado". If the Tarantual Nebula were at the distance of the Orion Nebula (1500 LY), the nearest stellar nursery to Earth, it would appear to cover about 30° on the sky or 60 full moons. The spindly arms of the Tarantula Nebula surround NGC 2070, a cluster that contains some of the intrinsically brightest, most massive stars known. Intriguing details of the nebula's core can be seen in this remarkable skyscape, a composite of 31 hours of exposure time.
This cosmic Tarantula also lies near the site of the closest recent supernova (1987a).

Tutto allora gli sembrava grande e bello, ed ogni cosa prendeva un significato diverso; i grandi problemi degli uomini, visti da lassù, diventavano più piccoli di niente.
Di questa sua visione molti ne rimanevano affascinati, ma nessuno sembrava coglierne l'essenza.
Pensò ancora all'impresa appena compiuta, e per la quale aveva messo a repentaglio la sua vita, assecondando un impulso di cui sconosceva la natura e la finalità ma alla cui forza non aveva saputo resistere.

E così, mentre il Sole correndo veloce lungo il suo margine illuminava con gli ultimi bagliori le terre che stavano al di qua del versante visibile, pensò che di quella luce, forse, stavano brillando anche i resti della sua Nave.
Rimase seduto a gambe incrociate fintanto che l'ultimo riflesso all'orizzonte non fu scomparso. Dopo di che, per la prima volta da giorni, si distese con gli occhi al cielo e le braccia e le gambe leggermente aperte e continuò a chiedersi quale fosse il senso di tutto ciò che aveva fatto se nessuno era lì, a condividerlo o ad accoglierne la memoria.
Si sentì disperatamente solo ed inutile ed un'angoscia terribile lo pervase per l'immensa solitudine che provava.
Era un naufrago che stava cercando di sopravvivere a se stesso, caduto su quel Mondo e con l'intero Universo intorno...".
