Carina-Calibration-PIA07773.jpgCarina Nebula, from Cassini78 visiteCassini briefly turned its gaze from Saturn and His Rings and Moons to marvel at the Carina Nebula, a brilliant region 8.000 LY from our Solar System and more than 200 LY across. Nearly every point of light in this image is a star in our galaxy, the Milky Way.
The nebula is a region of gas and dust made to glow by the ultraviolet light bursting from bright, hot and extremely massive young stars within. Darker regions in the scene are not devoid of stars; rather, they are areas where dense clouds of dust block the light from background stars.
This image and others like it are taken by the spacecraft from time to time for calibration purposes. Calibration images rarely contain such incredible sights. This one affirms Cassini's position as the farthest, working astronomical observatory ever established around our sun - our "eyes on the cosmos", a billion miles from Earth.
The image was taken using the Cassini wide-angle camera on May 14, 2005. The view is a 68-second, clear-filter exposure.

Certamente no, poich la Terra non affatto ferma: essa si muove, ruotando su se stessa e percorrendo la sua orbita attorno al Sole. Il Sole, a sua volta, orbita intorno al centro della Via Lattea la quale non ferma! Essa infatti si muove insieme al cd. "Gruppo Locale" il quale, compatto, si sta dirigendo verso il Grande Ammasso della Vergine (Virgo Galaxy Cluster). La Mappa che Vi presentiamo - e che rappresenta la diffusione della Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (o Radiazione di Fondo tout-court - RF) nell'intero cielo - ci dimostra, inter alia, che anche la RF si "muove" (ma attenti: la RF NON proviene da una direzione precisa del cosmo!) e che, muovendosi, si raffredda ("...radiation in the Earth's direction of motion appears blueshifted and hence hotter, while radiation on the opposite side of the sky is redshifted and colder...").
Ed ora la domanda, inevitabile: premesso che ci muoviamo, DOVE stiamo andando?!

Graph-PIA07395.jpgLooking back...130 visiteThis graph, or spectrum, shows the light from a dusty, distant galaxy (invisible to optical telescopes) that is located 11 BLY away. NASA's SST was able to capture the light from it by using heat-seeking infrared eyes. Spectra are created when a spectrograph spreads light out into its basic parts, like a prism turning sunlight into a rainbow. The spectra contain the signatures of molecules that contribute to an object's light. In this case, the galaxy's spectrum reveals the fingerprint for silicate dust (large dip at right), a planetary building block like sand, only smaller. This particular fingerprint is important because it helps to determine how far away the galaxy lies as well as how much the galaxy's light had stretched ("redshifted") during its journey to SST's eyes. Because the universe is expanding, a galaxy's light will shift toward reddish wavelengths as it moves away from us. This galaxy has a redshift of 1,95, meaning that its light travelled for 11 BY before 'hitting" SST's eyes. The presence of the silicate fingerprint is also significant because it implies that galaxies were ripe for planetary formation 11 billion years ago - back to a time when the universe was 3 billion years old. The universe is currently believed to be 13.5 billion years old. This is the furthest back in time that silicate dust has been detected around a galaxy.
