Venus.jpgDaytime Venus58 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 9 Aprile 2009:"This remarkable picture of a slender crescent Venus was made during daylight hours on March 26, 2009.
Venus was then very near Inferior Conjunction, its closest approach to a point on a line directly between Earth and the Sun. So, daylight was a good time to carefully record the telescopic view when both Venus and Sun were high in the daytime sky.
Near Inferior Conjunction, Venus is closest to us and at its largest apparent size, but Venus is also strongly backlit by Sunlight, presenting its night side partially outlined by a narrow crescent.
What makes the image remarkable are the faint arcs extending beyond the sunlit crescent around to the night side of Venus, due to sunlight filtering through the Planet's dense Atmosphere.
Astronomer Eddie Guscott reports from his site in Essex, England, that the faint extensions came and went as the Earth's atmospheric blurring changed. His image was constructed from 85 of the sharpest frames chosen from thousands taken with a webcam and telescope".MareKromium

South Polar Halo.jpgSouth Polar Halo57 visiteWhen Sunlight reflects and refracts off of tiny ice crystals in the atmosphere, the result can be ice crystal halos, which are related to rainbows (the latter being produced when Sunlight reflects and refracts from water droplets).
In Antarctica the temperatures are cold and the air is dry, so snow crystals grow very slowly. This slow growth tends to produce very clean hexagonal prisms, which are well suited for producing beautiful atmospheric displays. The example here is a South Pole halo, showing a rich variety of arcs and halos.
Halos arise from the way minute ice crystals in the atmosphere scatter Sunlight (or Moonlight!) into different angles.
The quality of a halo depends on the type and quality of the ice crystals that produce it.

M 31 and Hale Bopp.jpgTemporary Sky...57 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" del 13 Agosto 2006:"The Moon almost ruined this photograph. During late March and early April 1997, Comet Hale-Bopp passed nearly in front of the Andromeda Galaxy.
Here the Great Comet of 1997 and the Great Galaxy in Andromeda were photographed together on 1997 March 24th. The problem was the brightness of the Moon. The Moon was full that night and so bright that long exposures meant to capture the tails of Hale-Bopp and the disk of M31 would capture instead only moonlight reflected off the Earth's atmosphere. By the time the Moon would set, this opportunity would be gone. That's why this picture was taken during a total lunar eclipse".
