ALANBEAN-MANKINDROCK.jpgMankind Rock104 visiteThis is Gene Cernan as he was near the end of the third moonwalk of Apollo 17. He and astronaut-geologist Jack Schmitt had completed most of their work and were just gathering final equipment and samples, putting them aboard the lunar module. At this point, Gene turned toward the television camera and said, "Jack has picked up a very significant rock, composed of many fragments of many sizes and many shapes, probably from all parts of the Moon, probably billions of years old, but a rock of all sizes and shapes and even colors that had grown together to become a cohesive rock, outlasting the nature of space, sort of living together in a very coherent, very peaceful manner. We'd like to share a piece of this rock with many of the countries throughout the world. We hope that this will be a symbol of what our feelings are." Then they continued their preparations for leaving the Moon.
Gene knew he would be the last man on the Moon for quite a long time. As he closed his checklist and prepared for his ascent up the ladder, he said, "As we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave it as we came and, God willing, we shall return with peace and hope for all mankind." Gene Cernan, last man on the Moon, 5:34 a.m. GMT, December 14, 1972.
I felt this was such a fitting and proper occasion in the history of manned lunar exploration that I created two nearly identical paintings of this moment.

CloudsandClouds.jpgClouds and Clouds104 visiteThe clouds in the foreground are much different than the clouds in the background. In the foreground are a photogenic deck of Earth-based water clouds. The long exposure used to create the above photograph makes the light from the left, reflected from Phoenix, Arizona, USA, appear like a sunset. Far in the distance, however, are star clouds from the disk of our Milky Way Galaxy. Billions of stars like our Sun live there, circling our Galactic center every 200 million years. Contrast between the water clouds and the star clouds has been digitally enhanced. Between the two, visible on the upper right, is the planet Jupiter.

Tempus.jpgOut there...102 visite“…Ecco i doni del Dio:
Iniziare alle danze dei tiasi,
Mescolare le risa al suono dei flauti,
Troncare gli affanni,
Quando lo splendore dei grappoli
Rallegra le mense in onore degli Dei,
E nei conviti ornati di edera
Il vino delle coppe avvolge gli uomini
Nell'abbraccio del sonno.
Bocche senza freno, stoltezza senza limiti
Dalle sedi dell'Etere
Vedono le opere degli uomini.
Il semplice sapere non è saggezza,
Non lo è il pensare cose
Che non spettano ai mortali.
Breve è il tempo della vita:
E chi aspira a grandi mète
Dalle cento bocche
Fecondano una Terra senza Pioggia.
E la regione più bella,
La Pieria, sede delle Muse,
Sacro pendìo dell'Olimpo,
Là conducimi, Bromio, Bromio,
Dio che tra festosi evoè
Guidi e precedi le Baccanti.
Là stanno le Grazie e il
Desiderio: là alle Baccanti è lecito
Celebrare i Sacri Misteri.

Glory.jpgGlory never fades...101 visiteIf you tried to enter this hall of fog, you would find it dissipates around you. The hall is actually an the mountain from which this picture was taken.
Known as "The Glory", the phenomenon is frequently seen from airplanes. The ring's center is not visible, but if it were, the shadow of the observer would appear. This shadow would likely change as clouds passed, creating a faux moving giant known as the Brocken Spectre.
Pictured above, several concentric rings of the glory appear to create a hall for this mountain king. The cause of The Glory has only been understood recently and is relatively complex. Briefly, small droplets of water reflect, refract, and diffract Sunlight backwards towards the Sun. The phenomenon has a counterpart in astronomy, where looking out from planet Earth in the direction opposite the Sun yields a bright spot called "The Gegenschein".MareKromium

Super-Earths.jpgSuper-Earths?100 visiteda "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 20 Marzo 2006:"Are Super-Earths common around other star systems? Quite possibly. Unexpected evidence for this came to light recently when a planet orbiting a distant star gravitationally magnified the light of an even more distant star. Assuming the planet's parent star is normal red dwarf, the brightening is best explained if the planet is about 13 times the mass of the Earth and orbiting at the distance of the asteroid belt in our own Solar System. Given the small number of objects observed and similar determinations already obtained for other star systems, these super-Earths might be relatively common. Astronomers speculate that the planet might have grown into a Jupiter-sized planet if its star system had more gas. Since the planet was not observed directly, significant uncertainty remains in its defining attributes and future research will be aimed at better understanding this intriguing system (...)".

Iridescent_Cloud.jpgIridescent Cloud100 visiteCaption NASA:"Why would a cloud appear to be different colors? A relatively rare phenomenon known as "Iridescent Clouds" can show unusual colors vividly or a whole spectrum of colors simultaneously. These clouds are formed of small water droplets of nearly uniform size. When the Sun is in the right position and mostly hidden by thick clouds, these thinner clouds significantly diffract sunlight in a nearly coherent manner, with different colors being deflected by different amounts. Therefore, different colors will come to the observer from slightly different directions. Many clouds start with uniform regions that could show iridescence but quickly become too thick, too mixed, or too far from the Sun to exhibit striking colors.
This iridescent cloud was photographed above Boulder, Colorado last week".MareKromium
