Piú viste - Mars through the eyes of Soujourner-Pathfinder
SOU-SOL003-A.jpg

Peccato...

SOU-SOL024-2.jpgSunset (2) - Sol 2470 visiteThis image of the Martian sunset from Sol 24 shows much more color variation than had previously been seen. The blue color near the Sun is not caused by clouds of water ice, but by the Martian dust itself. The dust in the atmosphere absorbs blue light, giving the sky its red color, but it also scatters some of the blue light into the area just around the Sun because of its size. The blue color only becomes apparent near Sunrise and Sunset, when the light has to pass through the largest amount of dust.

SOU-SOL072-Chimp_right~0.jpgChimp-Rock - Sol 7268 visiteCaption NASA originale:"This image of the rock Chimp was taken by the Soujourner Rover's Front Camera on Sol 72 (September 15, 1997). Fine-scale texture on Chimp and other rocks is clearly visible. Wind tails, oriented from lower right to upper left, are seen next to small pebbles in the foreground. These were most likely produced by wind action".

SOU-SOL035.jpgWind-tails - Sol 3568 visiteThis image was taken by the Soujourner Rover's Left Front Camera on Sol 32. The Pathfinder Lander is at right and is about 9 mt away. Wind tails of dust are clearly seen extending from the left side of many of the small rocks in the foreground. The large rocks on the horizon at left center are the next goal of Soujourner as it continues our exploration of Mars.

SOU-SOL015.jpgClouds... - Sol 1568 visiteThese clouds from Sol 15 have a new look: as water ice clouds cover the sky, the sky takes on a more bluish cast. This is because small particles (perhaps 1/10th the size of the Martian dust, or 1/1000th the thickness of a human hair) are bright in blue light, but almost invisible in red light. Thus, scientists expect that the ice particles in the clouds are very small. The clouds were imaged by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP).

SOU-SOL024-1.jpgSunset (1) - Sol 2468 visiteThis is a close-up of the Sunset on Sol 24. The red sky in the background and the blue around the Sun are approximately as they would appear to the human eye. The color of the Sun itself is not right - the Sun was over exposed in each of the 3 color images that were used to make this picture - and it might be near white or slightly bluish.

SOU-SOL039-2.jpgPre-dawn clouds (2) - Sol 3968 visiteCaption NASA originale:"These are more wispy blue clouds from Sol 39 as seen by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder. The bright clouds near the bottom are about 30° above the horizon. The clouds are believed to be at an altitude of 10 to 15 Km, and are thought to be made of small water ice particles. The picture was taken about 35 minutes before Sunrise".

Caption originale:"Mars Pathfinder's forward rover ramp can be seen successfully unfurled in this color image, taken on Sol 3. This ramp was not used for the deploymentof the microrover Sojourner, which occurred at the end of Sol 2. When this image was taken, Sojourner was still latched to one of the lander's petals, waiting for the command sequence that would execute its descent off of the lander's petal. The image helped Pathfinder scientists determine whether to deploy the rover using the forward or backward ramps and the nature of the first rover traverse. The metallic object at the lower part of the image is the lander's low-gain antenna. The square at the end of the ramp is one of the spacecraft's magnetic targets. Dust that accumulates on the magnetic targets will later be examined by Sojourner's Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer instrument for chemical analysis. At center, a lander petal is visible".

Buona visione!
