Nulla di anomalo, a parte il suo valore storico: è la prima "occhiata" di Opportunity al Nuovo Mondo che la accoglieva e che, ad oggi - AD 2005, Maggio, 15 -, la ospita.

(1)212 visiteQuesta formazione rocciosa merita davvero un plauso alla sua stranezza: sembra, infatti, che si tratti di una roccia compatta la quale si è spaccata in due ma poi, ad un esame maggiormente attento e ravvicinato, si può vedere chiaramente che quelli che sembravano i due pezzi di un medesimo macigno semisepolto sono, in realtà, due porzioni di una sorta di "rivestimento" (come un guscio di roccia?) che si appoggiano su un rilievo sabbioso liscio ed uniforme. L'ombra che vediamo sul versante frontale della formazione rocciosa non ci lascia dubbi al riguardo: siamo di fronte ad un'Anomalia di Superficie a tutti gli effetti!

The protective device shielded the rover from intense frictional heat as it entered the martian atmosphere. The heat shield was shed during the descent and landing sequence, just before the rover (within its folded lander) was lowered on a bridle. Scientists and engineers are interested in seeing what effects the descent had on the heat shield and are directing Opportunity to examine it".
