Si tratta di un (ennesimo) vizio digitale del frame? O un dead-pixel? O si tratta di un oggetto reale?

The rover team plans to send Spirit to a vantage point dubbed "Larry's Lookout" for views to help in deciding whether to dip into "Tennessee Valley."
The base image for the map was taken by the Mars Orbiter Camera aboard NASA's Mars Global Surveyor.

Grandi complimenti al Dr Barca che ha evidenziato l'incredibile dettaglio il quale, come ovvio, "sfuggito" non solo alla NASA (e sin l...nihil sub Sole novi!), ma anche a tutti gli Anomaly Hunter del resto del Mondo...
Che dite, quindi? Che ne pensate di questa Surface Feature? E' pi o meno intrigante delle (sempre presunte) Rovine di Cydonia?!?...MareKromium

No, una semplice illusione ottica determinata dal particolare angolo di ripresa, ove rapportato alla configurazione del suolo ed alla posizione del Sole nel Cielo di Marte.
In realt come si vede piuttosto bene nell'inset magnificato, si tratta di una modesta depressione a forma circolare, sulla quale insiste un'ombra netta e squadrata, determinata - nel suo lato inferiore e laterale Dx - appunto - dalla configurazione della superficie che la proietta e resa curiosamente affilata non solo dalla posizione del Sole nel Cielo Marziano (ancora molto alto, riteniamo), ma anche dalla scarsa definizione e qualit del frame.
Un ringraziamento al nostro Dr Barca per l'occhio, la curiosit e, ovviamente, lo "spunto" (perch risolvere i piccoli misteri , a nostro modo di vedere, estremamente formativo e di grande aiuto per poi affrontare e tentare di risolvere quelli Grandi...).MareKromium

Carbon dioxide, mostly...212 visiteA view of the sky as observed by the Mini-Thermal Emission Spectrometer onboard the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. This instrument detects the different wavelengths of infrared light emitted by an object, in this case the sky, producing a graph (called a spectrum) that reveals the presence of specific chemicals. This spectrum, taken on Sol 7 in the early afternoon (night of January 9/10, 2004), contains the signatures of carbon dioxide (15 microns), atmospheric dust (9 microns) and water vapor (6 microns). Scientists also expect to see water ice clouds in the Martian Atmosphere, but did not observe them at the time of this observation. The thermal brightness of carbon dioxide allows the atmospheric temperature as a function of height to be determined.
Carbon dioxide makes up 95% of the Martian Atmosphere".

Engineers targeted Spirit for the center of the blue ellipse. Measurements taken during the Rover's descent by the Deep Space Network predicted its landing site to be the spot marked with a black dot. Later measurements taken on the ground by both the Deep Space Network and the Orbiter Mars Odyssey narrowed the predicted landing site to a spot marked with a white dot.
When initially choosing a landing site for the Rover, engineers avoided hazardous terrain outlined here in yellow and red. This map consists of data from Mars Odyssey and MGS".

The map imagery is from the MOC on NASA's MGS orbiter.
More than 15 months after landing on Mars, the Spirit rover is still going strong, having traveled a total of 4.276 mt as of Sol 450 (April 8, 2005). This elevation map shows the traverse followed by Spirit since arriving at the "Columbia Hills" in June, 2004.
The blue area at the foot of the Columbia Hills is approximately 20 mt higher in elevation than the site where Spirit landed in Gusev Crater. The highest peak is on the order of 80 mt higher still".

Spirit crossed those plains for several months after landing to the west, off the left edge of this image. The greenish-blue area is the "West Spur" of the "Columbia Hills," which Spirit reached on sol 156 (June 11, 2004). Since then, Spirit has been gradually ascending the slopes of the "West Spur" in an east-northeasterly direction. Southeast of the Rover's current position is a brighter green area that represents an abrupt increase in slope where the "West Spur" meets the steeper flanks of the "Columbia Hills." The yellow and red areas represent the highest slopes and peaks. A steep valley east of the Rover's location appears, from orbiter images, to have layered outcrops. Scientists are directing the Rover to a ridge overlooking the valley to get a better look at what lies ahead".
