This particular dark nebula is known as the "E Nebula", for its evocative shape, or B142 and B143, for its position(s) on a list of such nebula compiled by Barnard. The "E Nebula" spans roughly the angle of a full Moon and lies about 2000 Light Years distant. The nebula can be seen with binoculars and is particularly visible during the summer months in Earth's Northern Hemisphere. Other names for dark nebula include absorption nebula, as they efficiently absorb visible light emitted behind them, and molecular clouds, as they frequently attain temperatures low enough so that several different types of stable molecules can exist. The low temperatures of these interstellar clouds facilitate the formation of dense knots of gas that may then collapse into bright stars.Set 20, 2004

Star Forming Region DR21.jpgStar forming region "DR 21 - Cygni" - SST81 visiteDeep in the normally hidden recesses of giant molecular cloud DR 21, a stellar nursery has been found creating some of the most massive stars yet recorded. The orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera opened the window into the cloud in mid- infrared light. The cloud is opaque to visible light because of dense interstellar dust. Noticeable in the above representative color infrared Spitzer image are huge bubbles, a complex tapestry of dust and gas and very massive stars. The infrared filaments actually glow because of organic compounds known as "PAHs". The intricate patterns are caused by complex interactions between interstellar winds, radiation pressures, magnetic fields, and gravity. The pictured region spans about 75 LY and lies about 6.000 LY distant toward the constellation of Cygnus.Set 19, 2004

Questo è il problema.

Microquasars.jpgMicro-Quasar in Cassiopeia and IC 180587 visiteMicroquasars (MQ), bizarre binary star systems, generating high-energy radiation and blasting out jets of particles at nearly the speed of light, live in our Milky Way galaxy. The energetic microquasar systems seem to consist of a very compact object, either a neutron star or a black hole, formed in a supernova explosion but still co-orbiting with an otherwise normal star. And now, using a very long array of radio telescopes, astronomers are reporting that at least 1 MQ (LSI+61 303) can be traced back to its probable birthplace, within a cluster of young stars in the constellation Cassiopeia. About 7.500 LY from Earth, the star cluster and surrounding nebulosity are shown in the deep sky image above. The cluster stars are identified by yellow boxes and circles.
A yellow arrow indicates the common apparent motion of the cluster stars; the green one shows the deduced motion of the microquasar system and the red arrow depicts the microquasar's motion relative to the star cluster itself.

Gomez_s Hamburger - HST.jpgProtoplanetary Nebula - "Hamburger"130 visiteUn commento a questa immagine si impone: questa nebulosa protoplanetaria è stata chiamata "hamburger" - si, proprio come i panini di Mc Donald's... -. Un elevatissimo quantitativo di oggetti relativi allo spazio ed ai pianeti in generale ed a Marte in particolare viene quotidianamente battezzato usando una nomenclatura - quando va bene - "oscura" e, quando va male, "ridicola" sino ai limiti dell'offensivo. Ci siamo spesso chiesti il perchè di questo (per lo meno "curioso") approccio ai Misteri dell'Universo e, alla fine, ci siamo convinti che l'attribuzione di nomi ridicoli costituisca un modo di esorcizzare quello che non riusciamo a comprendere, in tutto o in parte, facendolo ricadere sotto una realtà che deve essere "nota" ed "innocua". Noi non sappiamo se questo modo di ragionare sia giusto o no, ma una cosa è certa: alle volte si esagera. La nebulosa "Hamburger", secondo noi, fa parte della casistica in cui si è esagerato nella semplificazione, ottenendo il risultato della "banalizzazione".

Una simpatica definizione diceva che il Buco Nero è una sorta di "Aspirapolvere Cosmico", capace di risucchiare ogni genere di corpo fisico al suo interno, incluso ciò che noi chiamiamo "Tempo". Nel complesso di definizioni, comunque - e nella loro diversità - è sempre emerso un punto comune, che è questo: NULLA, una volta afferrato, può sfuggire al Black Hole.
Ebbene io credo, con ciò creando un paradosso, che se un uomo venisse catturato da uno di questi oggetti, qualcosa potrebbe comunque riuscire a scappare all'immensa attrazione di un siffatto "Aspirapolvere Cosmico".
Cosa?
Ma è semplicissimo: esso non potrebbe mai trattenere un qualsiasi "pensiero" proveniente da questo ipotetico uomo, prigioniero del suo eterno ed invincibile abbraccio gravitazionale..."

Recent observations in far infrared light (...) indicate a dust disk surrounding Fomalhaut that has both a hole in the center and a warped edge. Now the hole in the center indicates that dust has fallen onto interior planets - possibly like the Earth - while the warp at the edge indicates the gravitational pull of a planet like Jupiter or Saturn. As you can see, the plane is cut by dark dust lanes, clouds and several dusty regions. You can clearly see the 2 Magellanic Clouds (note the prominent bar and incipient spiral structure of the Large Cloud). Near the Small Magellanic Cloud is the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Cutting almost north-south through one side of the bulge is the dwarf Sagittarius Galaxy which, along with the Clouds, is a Milky Way's satellite Galaxy.Set 12, 2004
