Astronomers detected an Extrasolar Planet that is five times as massive as Earth, circling a red dwarf - such as a relatively cool star - every 10 years. The distance between this Planet, designated OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, and its host is about 3 times greater than that between the Earth and the Sun (means about 240/250 MKM).
The Planet's large orbit and its dim parent star probably make its surface temperature a frigid -364 Fahrenheit (about -220 Celsius).Gen 29, 2006

D-RAD.jpgDeinococcus Radiodurans: the "Terra-Farmers"...95 visiteThese bacteria could survive on another planet. In an Earth lab, Deinococcus Radiodurans (D. Rad) survive extreme levels of radiation, extreme temperatures, dehydration, and exposure to genotoxic chemicals. Amazingly, they even have the ability to repair their own DNA, usually within 48 hours.
Known as an extremophile, bacteria such as D. Rad are of interest to NASA partly because they might be adaptable to help human astronauts survive on other worlds. A recent map of D. Rad's DNA might allow biologists to augment their survival skills with the ability to produce medicine, clean water and oxygen.
Already they have been genetically engineered to help clean up spills of toxic mercury. Likely one of the oldest surviving life forms, D. Rad was discovered by accident in the 1950s when scientists investigating food preservation techniques could not easily kill it.

30 Doradus.jpg30-Doradus and the Tarantula Nebula134 visiteFirst cataloged as a star, 30 Doradus is actually an immense Star Forming Region in nearby galaxy "The Large Magellan Cloud".
The Region's spidery appearance is responsible for its popular name, the Tarantula Nebula, except that this tarantula is about 1000 LY across, and 180.000 LY away in the Southern Constellation "Dorado".
If the Tarantula Nebula were at the distance of the Orion Nebula (1500 LY), the nearest stellar nursery to Earth, it would appear to cover about 30° on the sky or 60 full moons.
The spindly arms of the Tarantula Nebula surround NGC 2070, a cluster that contains some of the intrinsically brightest, most massive stars known.
Intriguing details of the nebula's core can be seen in this remarkable skyscape, a composite of 31 hours of exposure time.
This cosmic Tarantula also lies near the site of the closest recent supernova (1987a).Gen 06, 2006

KappaCrucis.jpgThe "Jewel Box" (alias Kappa Crucis)73 visiteThis image of part of the Jewel Box, an open star cluster, was acquired by the HiRISE camera, an instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, on December 14, 2005 as part of a calibration sequence while en route to the Red Planet. The Jewel Box was so named by Sir John Herschel because of the variety of star colors in the cluster, including the large red giant star seen near the bottom of this image. The Jewel Box, also called Kappa Crucis, is about 10 MY old, so it is much younger than our Sun which is about 4.600 MY old. This cluster lies about 7.500 LY away, so the light we see today left the stars in the Neolithic Ages of Earth, when farming was first being practiced by our ancestors.
HiRISE can image in three colors, green, red, and near-infrared, so the colors are not exactly as we see them with our eyes.
The Jewel Box cluster lies in the Crux constellation, also called the Southern Cross, the most compact constellation in the sky. Dic 31, 2005
