More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula glows primarily by light reflected from Rigel, the brightest star in the upper right of the full image. Fine dust in the nebula reflects the light. The blue color is caused not only by Rigel's blue color but because the dust grains reflect blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in Earth's atmosphere are molecules of Nitrogen and Oxygen. A whistle blew in the common room.
"More like a damned quasar than a supernova!" someone muttered.
This observation was followed by a long silence, broken by Almond.
"Which would explain something I've been damned worried about."
"What's this about, Dr. Almond?" asked Gaynor, his eyes red from lack of sleep.
"The fact is, that thing's location is exactly the same as the Galactic Center.
It's completely obvious, isn't it? The center of the Galaxy has exploded."
As Almond made this statement, his deep voice had a gravelly tone."
