Fienga - Lunexit Team)59 visitePrevious HiRISE images of Fresh Craters in the Middle to High Northern Latitudes show exposed Water Ice on the Poleward-facing slopes. Here is another example.
The EDM shows an approx. 6 meters (20 feet) diameter Crater. Based on before and after images acquired by the Odyssey THEMIS and MRO CTX cameras, respectively, this Crater formed some time between April 2004 and January 2010.
The Crater is at a latitude of 44° North and is itself located on the ejecta of a larger crater. The image was acquired in early Summer, when frost at this latitude is not expected.
It is therefore believed that the bright blueish material that can be seen in the EDM is Subsurface Ice that was exposed by the impact.
This ice is probably at the same depth and has a similar origin to that excavated by the Phoenix Lander back in 2008. The Crater was first seen in an image acquired with MRO's Context Camera (CTX). The best image of this Region prior to CTX was from one of the Viking Orbiters, and the Crater is not visible in it.
This could either mean that the Crater formed sometime between 1976 and 1999, or that there might have been more Dust on the Surface in 1976, or that maybe the air could have been hazy, thus obscuring the Crater.
Based on the HiRISE image, we suspect that the Crater is more than several decades old, because at full resolution we see a "Textured Surface" (see EDM n.2) that is common in Dust-Mantled Regions of Mars, but absent in the youngest craters.MareKromium02/13/11 at 16:48MareKromium: ...altro craterino fresco con raggi...

PSP_004030_1855_RED_browse.jpgBlast from the (Very Recent) Past56 visiteIn the center of this image is a very sharp-rimmed impact crater just 35 mt wide.
It lies in a bright, dust-covered region, but is surrounded by a slightly darker spot about 3 Km wide. The impact event created a blast of high winds that disturbed the dust and darkened the spot.
Since dust is constantly settling over the Region, the fact that we can still see the dark region means the impact event occurred of late, perhaps in recent decades. There are many dark streaks on topographic slopes over an even wider region surrounding the dark spot - these could be due to dust avalanches triggered by the impact, either from the air blast or from seismic shaking of the ground.
There are also rays of very small (approx. 1 mt in diameter) secondary craters extending radially outward from the 35-mt crater, created by the impact of rocks ejected from the main crater.
