SOL710-mars_spirit_PIA03274_f-01.jpgEl Dorado on Mars! (1) - Sol 71053 visiteOriginal caption:"NASA's MER Spirit welcomed the beginning of 2006 on Earth by taking this striking panorama of intricately rippled sand deposits in Gusev Crater on Mars. This is an approximate true-color rendering of the "El Dorado" ripple field provided by Spirit over the New Year's holiday weekend. The view spans about 160° in azimuth from left to right and consists of images acquired by Spirit's PanCam on Spirit's Sol 708 and 710 (such as Dec. 30, 2005 and Jan. 1, 2006). Spirit used the PanCam's 750-, 530- and 430-nnmt filters to capture the colors on Mars. Scientists have eliminated seams between individual frames in the sky portion of the mosaic to better simulate the vista a person standing on Mars would see. Spirit spent several days acquiring images, spectral data, and compositional and mineralogical information about these large sand deposits before continuing downhill toward Home Plate". 1 commenti04/24/07 at 08:22Anakin: Bellissime queste immagini. What might look, above, like a military attack, though, was once again just a scientific one - Spirit was instructed to closely inspect some interesting rocks near the summit of Husband Hill. Spirit's Panoramic Camera captured the Rover's Instrument Deployment Device above as moved to get a closer look at an outcrop of rocks named Hillary. The Spirit rover, and its twin rover Opportunity, have now been exploring the red planet for over three years. Both Spirit and Opportunity have found evidence that parts of Mars were once wet".3 commentiMareKromium03/13/07 at 13:51MareKromium: Fammi un fischio e prendimi un paio di biglietti, ...

OPP-SOL956-PIA09170.jpgClouds over Meridiani (natural colors) - Sol 956174 visiteLike clouds on Earth, these Martian clouds are probably composed of ice crystals and possibly supercooled water droplets. They are similar in appearance to terrestrial cirrocumulus or high altocumulus clouds. On Earth, such clouds are relatively transient and consist of small, individual cloudlets arranged in rippled patterns. They usually form 6 to 12 Km (about 4 to 7 miles) above Earth's surface by a process known as convection, during which warm air rises and cools, with clouds condensing from the moist air once it has cooled sufficiently.

These Martian clouds appear to be associated with a broader layer of ice-crystal clouds fanning out toward the upper right of the frames at the end of the movie. This is similar to the occurrence of terrestrial cirrocumulus and altocumulus clouds within layers of cirrus or cirrostratus clouds on Earth.
Also apparent in this movie are prominent waves in the clouds, a result of the effect of gravity waves on cloud thickness, as on Earth.

Though both Rovers now have the ability to autonomously detect clouds, these images were taken prior to the first use of the new abilities. The images shown here were stored on Opportunity and were transmitted to Earth on Sol 1056 (such as Jan. 12, 2007) during a routine communications pass.
