Walking on Mars with Spirit and Opportunity

A 3-mt (10-foot) bump took the Rover to an outcrop dubbed "Fruit Basket" for an intensive investigation of targets there. So far Opportunity has studied 'Lemon Rind' with its complete suite of Robotic Arm instruments and begun an inspection of 'Strawberry'. The plan is to drive east to the "Erebus Highway" after finishing work at Fruit Basket".
Nota: ancora una volta - e la domanda NON è oziosa - ci chiediamo quale sia il criterio adottato dai Ricercatori del Centro Controllo Missione per dare i (sia pure provvisori) nomi ai veri "targets" che vengono incontrati ed investigati. Qualcuno di noi pensa che i targets sìano identificati da una sorta di "codice"; altri credono che non ci sia nessun criterio vero e proprio dietro la scelta di questi ridicoli nomi. Voi che ne pensate?

OPP-SOL561-B_P2591_L257F-B568R1_br2.jpgLemon Rind and Strawberry (false colors) - Sol 56155 visiteThis false-color panoramic image, taken on Sol 561 (Aug. 22, 2005) by Opportunity, shows the nature of the outcrop rocks that the Rover is encountering on its southward journey across the martian plains to Erebus Crater. The rocks, similar in make-up to those encountered earlier in the mission, display a clear pattern of cracks as well as rind-like features (identifiable as a light shade of blue to olive in the image) coating the outcrop surface. Prominent in the image are two holes (one on the rock, one on the rind) drilled with the Rover's RAT to facilitate chemical analysis of the underlying material. The reddish color around the holes is from iron-rich dust produced during the grinding operation.
The rind, nicknamed Lemon Rind, and the underlying rock (Strawberry), have turned out to be similar in overall chemistry and texture. Science team members are working to understand the nature of the relationship between these kinds of rocks and rinds on Meridiani Plains.

OPP-SOL562-1N178076621EFF5900P1875R0M1.jpg360° Panorama (1) - Sol 56254 visiteLa proposta di oggi - 25 Agosto 2005 - è una serie di fotogrammi che ci daranno una visione a 360° dell'area su cui il Rover Opportunity si sta muovendo e che, sulla base delle informazioni rilasciate dalla NASA, si trova a soli 180 mt (circa) dal Cratere Erebus (il quale, tuttavia, non è ancora visibile in alcun frame).
La eccellente definizione di questi frames ci permette di osservare, con una notevole ampiezza di particolari, il curioso intrecciarsi e sovrapporsi delle dune di Meridiani (i Side-Winders) con queste formazioni rocciose che sembrano essere modellate "ad incastro" (e che abbiamo battezzato come "Martian Paving" sin dai tempi dell'esplorazione dell'Endurance Crater) e che, sebbene la NASA le qualifichi come semplici "affioramenti" (e cioè "outcrops"), a noi danno la netta sensazione di costituire una uniforme "pavimentazione" che giace, probabilmente, solo a pochi cm al di sotto delle sabbie e polveri che caratterizzano questa zona di Marte.

OPP-SOL562-1N178076672EFF5900P1875R0M1.jpg360° Panorama (2) - Sol 56283 visiteAnche in questo (bellissimo) secondo frame, potete notare come questi outcrops - che a noi piace chiamare come "Pavimenti di Marte" - sìano sostanzialmente "piatti", e quindi profondamente differenti dagli altri outcrops che invece caratterizzano l'area di Gusev Crater (Spirit). A ben guardare, dopo aver anche esaminato con questa specifica ottica ed in questa particolare direzione i frames Viking e Pathfinder, i Martian Paving ci sembrano essere proprio (ed almeno sino al prossimo "landing" di una qualche Sonda USA od Europea) una prerogativa esclusiva della Regione di Meridiani Planitia.
