Da questa immagine (Right Pan.Cam, Non-linearized Full frame EDR acquired on Sol 543 of Opportunity's mission to Meridiani Planum at approx. 13:35:47 MLT, camera commanded to use Filter 2), l'analogia fra questo tipo di suolo e quello circostante il Cratere Endurance e, in parte minore, il Cratere Eagle, sembra evidente.
Negli interstizi fra una "mattonella" e l'altra, si vedono nettamente le solite bacche (o "Martian Berries") che, invece, sembravano essere del tutto sparite - o quasi... - durante la traversata fra i Side-Winders.
Da notare, in una delle immagini precedenti (MarsPan 3), le tracce che mostrano il superamento, da parte del Rover, di un Side-Winder del tutto simile a Purgatory Dune (forse anche più alto) ma, stranamente, senza la nascita di alcun inconveniente...

Tutto come sempre: un mucchietto di chiacchiere dai toni entusiastici, qualche punta di jargon, ma nessuna informazione realmente utile...

Il Sole, sebbene grande appena poco più di un terzo rispetto a come lo vediamo sulla Terra, sta splendendo alto sulla pianura di Meridiani e la temperatura al suolo, in questo momento, è di circa 19°C.
E' strano, ma più guardiamo Marte, attraverso gli occhi dei Rover, e più ci è difficile credere al fatto che sia così brutalmente inospitale. Ma forse la colpa è anche nostra. Forse è perchè non siamo ancora andati a vedere da vicino quello che succede nelle Regioni Polari. Magari, in quelle zone, riusciremmo finalmente a vedere questa landa deserta e ghiacciata alla quale gli Scienziati cercano (da tempo e vogliamo dire 'disperatamente') di farci abituare...
