Un quesito legittimo: la materia non è semplice. E allora, per essere più chiari, eccoVi una coppia di frames che vale più di cento pagine di chiacchiere: lo stesso - piccolo - rilievo ripreso due volte dalla stessa camera - la Camera Panoramica o PanCam - usando due diversi filtri/colore (il 2 ed il 7) con meno di un minuto di tempo trascorso fra uno scatto e l'altro e con uno delta prospettico nullo (l'occhio della PanCam che ha effettuato le riprese è sempre il Sx ed il Rover non si è mosso fra le due riprese).
Il risultato? Due rilievi radicalmente diversi.

Chiaro ora che cosa vuol dire "trasformare la realtà" mediante il semplice cambio di filtro/colore? Qual'è la "ripresa vera", o la "più vera" fra le due?
Ebbene, se la NASA decidesse di rispondere a questo quesito ci direbbe, in una certa misura correttamente, che "entrambe le riprese sono vere" e che le caratteristiche superficiali del sasso sono quelle che si vedono "sia nella prima ripresa che nella seconda".
Giusto, ma questa è una risposta tanto esatta, quanto ingannevole: il punto nodale è che, ad occhi umani e per occhi umani, quello che ci viene mostrato NON E' - in entrambi i casi - quello che vedremmo se fossimo là. Ed è questo il senso delle nostre (e non solo) riflessioni sui veri colori di Marte e sulla vera apparenza di questo Mondo. Un Mondo che possiamo solo immaginare, anche se lo vediamo in 1000 modi diversi tutti i giorni, ed il cui vero volto, proprio perchè mostrato in 1000 modi diversi, tutti veri e quindi nessuno vero, rimane elusivo.

Sol 760: Spirit acquired images of its work area with both Nav and PanCam's. The Rover also conducted atmospheric observations.
Sol 761: Spirit used the microscopic imager to acquire images of a rock target called "Stars". Then the Rover brushed that target with the RAT and examined it again with the MI after the brushing.
Spirit then began checking the mineral composition of the "Stars" target with the Mössbauer spectrometer.
Sol 762 (Feb. 23): Spirit continued the Mössbauer study of "Stars". Following an overhead pass of the Odyssey orbiter, Spirit began an analysis of "Stars" with the APXrS. Scientists planned to have the Rover continue collecting scientific data over the weekend from another target, called "Crawfords".

SOL763-PIA02686.jpgBrushed Rocks on top of Home Plate - Sol 763 (False Colors; credits: NASA/JPL/ASU)54 visiteNASA's MER Spirit acquired this false-color image at 11:48 MLST on Mars on the Rover's 746th Sol (such as Feb. 26, 2006), after using the RAT to brush the surfaces of rock targets informally named "Stars" (on the left) and "Crawfords" (on the right). Small streaks of dust extend for several cm behind the small rock chips and pebbles in the dusty, red soils. Because the Rover was looking South-West when this image was taken, the wind streaks indicate that the dominant wind direction was from the South-East.
The targets Stars and Crawfords are on a rock outcrop located on top of Home Plate. The outcrop is informally named James 'Cool Papa' Bell, after a Negro Leagues Hall of Famer who played for both the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Kansas City Stars.
The image combines frames taken by Spirit's PanCam through the camera's 753-, 535- and 432-nnmt filters. It is enhanced to emphasize color differences among the rocks, soils and brushed areas. The blue circular area on the left, Stars, was brushed on 761 (Feb. 22, 2006). The one on the right, Crawfords, was brushed on sol 763 (Feb. 25, 2006).

Operando qualche ingrandimento dell'immagine (ma senza eccedere: la risoluzione è brutta e scarsa), il macigno pare avere i bordi "seghettati".
Vedremo se la NASA ci saprà dire qualcosa di più su questo rilievo superficiale di "chiara origine vulcanica"...
A proposito: il "Boss" dei MER Spirit ed Opportunity (Steve Squyres), ammette candidamente di non avere ancora un'idea su "che cosa" sìano effettivamente una marea di rilievi superficiali che abbiamo visto e tentato di indagare sino ad ora. Beh, se lo dice lui...C'è da credergli, ma allora perchè gli altri membri del MER Science Team continuano a parlare ed a manifestare chiarezze che anche il Mars Principal Investigator NON ha?!?...
