Walking on Mars with Spirit and Opportunity

Spirit is looking to the SouthEast and through the martian haze has captured the rim of Gusev crater, approximately 80 Km (such as 49,7 miles) away on the horizon.
The right side of this image reveals the portion of the crater edge that descends into the mouth of Ma'adim Vallis, a channel that opens into Gusev crater. Spirit is currently traveling toward the "Columbia Hills," which lie to the left of the region pictured here. This image is similar to another PanCam image taken on Sol 68, but Gusev's ridge is more visible here because the atmospheric dust caused by Winter dust storms has settled. Scientists expect to get even clearer images than this one in upcoming Soles".

Si tratta di 3 frames PanCam che iniziano alle 6:07 MLT.

SOL099-Daisy_Rock-PIA05074.jpgDaisy... - Sol 99 (Natural Colors; credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech)235 visiteAncora un nuovo frame in colori "veri" (o presunti tali) ci arriva dal Sol 99 di Spirit e ci mostra un macigno semi-sepolto nelle consuete sabbie arancioni di Gusaev Crater, sul quale spicca il "fiore" disegnato dalle spazzole del Rover: Daisy.
Daisy dovrebbe permetterci di vedere il vero colore del pietrone Marziano - appunto coperto da polveri arancioni - ed in effetti, dopo aver ingrandito ed elaborato l'immagine, riusciamo a vedere - ancora una volta - un color grigio/argento piuttosto brillante, con chiazze e venature più scure (blu-cenere?) le quali fanno assomigliare anche questo macigno al granito e/o al marmo. Purtroppo la qualità dell'immagine (in termini di definizione) è davvero pessima e quindi non ci sbilanciamo oltre queste misere annotazioni.
Una curiosità: lo sapevate che Daisy - oltre ad essere il fiore disegnato dal Rover - è anche il titolo della canzone che, nel film "2001 - Odissea nello Spazio", viene intonata da HAL-9000 pochi istanti prima di essere disinserito? (è del 1896!)
