SOL045-PIA05553.gifMartian Eclipse: Phobos (GIF Movie) - Sol 4555 visiteCaption NASA:"This animation shows the transit of Mars' moon Phobos across the Sun. It is made up of images taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on the morning of the 45th Martian Day, or Sol, of its mission.
This observation will help refine our knowledge of the orbit and position of Phobos. Other spacecraft may be able to take better images of Phobos using this new information. This event is similar to solar eclipses seen on Earth in which our Moon passes in front of the Sun.
The images were taken by the Rover's Panoramic Camera".

Scientists are intrigued by the clustering of small pebbles and the crack-like fine lines, which indicate a coherent surface that expands and contracts. A number of processes can cause materials to expand and contract, including cycles of heating and cooling; freezing and thawing and...rising and falling of salty liquids within a substance. This false-color image was created using the blue, green and infrared filters of the Rover's PanCam. Scientists chose this particular combination of filters to enhance the heterogeneity of the Martian soil".

The trench - dubbed Road Cut, is 7 cm (3") deep. The soil at this location is more cohesive than the material where Spirit's twin, Opportunity, dug its first trench at Meridiani Planum.
Spirit made 11 back-and-forth passes to dig this trench, and still did not produce as deep a hole as Opportunity dug in 6 passes.
Scientists and engineers plan to begin up-close inspection of the soil in this trench on Sol 48, by placing the MI on the floor and the walls before conducting readings with the Rover's Moessbauer and Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometers on some of the same points".

SOL051-Humphrey.gif"Scrubbing" Humphrey... - Sol 51 (GIF-Movie; credits: Dr Marco Faccin)55 visiteUno splendido GIF-Movie ci mostra, oltre alla (leggera) "grattatina" che il RAT (Rock Abrasion Tool) di Spirit diede all'enigmatico (pseudo)macigno conosciuto come Humphrey, anche un suggestivo (e davvero quasi impercettibile) "lampo di luce" che arriva dall'orizzonte.
Ma attenzione: il "lampo" non dovrebbe essere un image-artifact: secondo noi, infatti, correlando lo spostamento dell'ombra (visibile in basso) all'istante del flash (visibile in alto a Dx dell'Osservatore, tra ore 02:00 e 03:00), possiamo ragionevolmente ritenere che si tratti del riflesso dei raggi del Sole sull'ancora lontano Heat-Shield di Spirit - il quale, come ricorderete, si trovava (e si trova tutt'ora, riteniamo...) proprio sul bordo (rim) del medio-piccolo cratere Bonneville.
Se l'ipotesi "riflesso" non Vi convincesse, noi siamo open verso nuove teorie ed ipotesi: basta che scriviate...

SOL052-2N130956459EFF1100P1934L0M1.jpgPeaceful Sunrise56 visiteUna quieta (e romantica) veduta di un piccolo ed annebbiato Sole che, lentamente, si alza nel cielo di Marte. Il Sole, in realtà, non lo si riesce a vedere proprio per nulla, perso com'è nel "glare" che si è generato sopra ed attorno ad esso, ma il bello di questa immagine, secondo noi, è proprio in quella grande e diffusa luminosità alla quale fa da contrasto il netto e (ancora) scuro panorama delle colline Marziane. Sono le 5:18:59 MLT: è ancora molto presto per andarsene in giro, ma il mattiniero Spirit si sta già mettendo in marcia...
