These structures likely result from an interplay between windblown and water-involved processes.
The PanCam on NASA's MER Opportunity acquired the exposures for this image on Spirit's 749th Sol (Feb. 10, 2006). This view is an approximately true-color rendering mathematically generated from separate images taken through all of the left PanCam's 432- to 753-nnmt filters".

(1)104 visiteAppena intuibili in questo primo frame ma nettissime nel secondo e terzo: le crepe che sembrano ingoiare (!) le sabbie e le polveri superficiali di questa zona di Meridiani Planum (e che il Dr Pullini ha definito "Clessidre Marziane") acquisiscono a buon diritto il titolo di "Singolarità". Il Dr Pullini ha supposto - riteniamo correttamente - che un sensibile "aiuto" in quest'opera di "deglutizione" delle sabbie e delle polveri superficiali da parte del sottosuolo di Meridiani, arrivi proprio dal passaggio del Rover Opportunity. Tuttavia, a guardare bene queste immagini - specie i frames 2 e 3 - la sensazione è che tutta quest'area potrebbe essere interessata da "cedimenti" sotterranei.
