Sagittarius~0.jpgThe "Sagittarius' Dwarf Tidal Stream"105 visiteDa "NASA - Picture of the Day" del 29 Maggio 2005:"Recent 'Wide Field Images' and analyses indicate that our home galaxy is actually still in the process of devouring one of its closer satellite neighbors.
This unfortunate neighbor, the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, is now seen to be part of a larger Sagittarius Tidal Stream, a loose filament of stars, gas, and possibly dark matter that entangles the Milky Way. Speculation also holds that the Sagittarius Dwarf was once pulled through the Milky Way disk very close to our Sun's current location. An important resulting realization is that galaxies contain a jumble of clumps and filaments of both dim and dark matter".

Saharian_Night.jpg
Saharian_Night.jpgAlgerian Night62 visiteCaption NASA, da "NASA - Picture of the Day" del giorno 27 Giugno 2009:"This panoramic image of a starry night looks across a dry, desolate landscape.
The magnificent view was recorded from Tassili National Park, in the heart of the Sahara Desert in southern Algeria.
Rising above eroded sandstone cliffs, the celestial menagerie of constellations includes Draco the Dragon, Cygnus the Swan, Aquila the Eagle and Scorpius the Scorpion. Ruling planet Jupiter shines through clouds very close to the horizon near picture center, while star clouds of the Milky Way arc through Sagittarius above the rocks at the far right. Bright blue stars Deneb, in Cygnus, and Altair, in Aquila, also shine in the starry night along with Scorpius' bright yellowish star Antares, the rival of Mars. Prehistoric skygazers surely witnessed a similar sky. In addition to dramatic sandstone formations, the Tassili region is noted for rock art and archaeological sites dating to Neolithic times when the local climate was wetter".

SgrA_sharp_big.gif
SgrA_sharp_big.gifMovements near the Galaxy Center68 visiteCaption NASA originale:"Why are these stars moving so fast? Shown above is a time-lapse movie in infrared light detailing how stars in the central light-year of our Galaxy have moved over the past 8 years. The yellow mark at the image center represents the location of a peculiar radio source named Sagittarius A.
If these fast stars are held to the Galactic Center by gravity, then the central object exerting this gravity must be both compact and massive.
Analysis of the stellar motions indicates that over one million times the mass of our Sun is somehow confined to a region less than a fifth of a light-year across. Astronomers interpret these observations as strong evidence that the center of our Galaxy is home to a very massive black hole".
