L'evidente sottigliezza delle nuvole è indicativa della circostanza per cui esse dovrebbero essere composte in larga prevalenza da ghiaccio d'acqua. Da ricordare, quindi, che le formazioni nuvolose "spesse", su Marte, sono invece prevalentemente costituite da polveri.
