SOU-SOL036-1.jpgMartian Skies, according to NASA... - Sol 3655 visiteCaption originale di Don Davis:"Only one instance of color adjusting of images has aroused any concern to me regarding integrity of presentation. This Pathfinder Martian Sunrise photo was first released with a pink cloudy sky; a later version of the same picture, on the right, balanced with more care towards presenting what the cameras saw, revealed a much more subdued scene. Clearly the conclusions on cloud lighting and atmospheric conditions will be affected by such colors".

SOU-SOL036-35136.jpgHuge Rocks and Mountains?

SOU-SOL039-1.jpgSagan Memorial Station - Sol 3978 visiteCaption NASA originale:"This is one of the best images of the Sagan Memorial Station taken by the Soujourner Rover. Looking out from the Rock Garden, the Camera Mast and High Gain Antenna can clearly be seen above the American flag and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory logo".

SOU-SOL039-1~0.jpgPre-dawn clouds (1) - Sol 39106 visiteCaption NASA originale:"These are more wispy blue clouds from Sol 39 as seen by the Imager for Mars Pathfinder. The bright clouds near the bottom are about 10° above the horizon. The clouds are believed to be at an altitude of 10 to 15 Km and are thought to be made of small water ice particles. The picture was taken about 40 minutes before Sunrise".

SOU-SOL039-3-DD.jpgIce-clouds from Soujourner Site - Sol 39 (Natural Colors; credits for the additional process. and color.: Don Davis)130 visiteHigh altitude clouds loom above the dusty morning twilight.
Note: on Mars the 'Raleigh scattering' - which colors our sky blue - is greatly diminished by the low atmospheric pressure.

SOU-SOL039-3.jpgPre-dawn clouds (3) - Sol 3997 visiteCaption NASA originale:"This true color image shows the eastern sky, 30 degrees above the horizon at 05:13 MLT on Sol 39. The bright streaks are probably ice clouds which have formed during the night. In the true colour image, the clouds appear to be blue compared to the background. This is a real effect. Unlike the red dust, the clouds are almost invisible at infrared wavelengths.
The clouds are also moving. In order to create this image, the individual, single color, data frames have had to be shifted with respect to each other. The motion indicates that the clouds are moving from the north-east to the South-West".

SOU-SOL039-5-SunrisePthf-PIA01548_modest.jpgSunrise on Mars from Pathfinder - Sol 39 (True Colors; credits: NASA/JPL)159 visiteCaption NASA:"Sunrise, Sol 39. This true color, pre-sunrise image (approximately 05:30 MLT) is composed of six images extending 30 ° in azimuth and 45 ° in elevation and shows the brownish gray predawn sky. A description of the techniques used to generate this color image from IMP data can be found in Maki et al., 1999. Note: a calibrated output device is required accurately reproduce the correct colors.
Mars Pathfinder is the second in NASA's Discovery program of low-cost spacecraft with highly focused science goals. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, developed and manages the Mars Pathfinder mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. JPL is an operating division of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The IMP was developed by the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory under contract to JPL. Peter Smith is the Principal investigator".

SOU-SOL042-Flat_Top_left.jpgFlat-Top close-up (1) - Sol 4289 visiteThese two images make a stereo pair taken from the Soujourner Rover's Front Cameras on the morning of Sol 42. Visible in the foreground is the rock nicknamed Flat Top. Based on previous images from the Pathfinder Lander camera, Flat Top appeared to have a layered texture (in the opinion of some scientists). These close-up images show that this is probably not the case. The texture visible on the side of the rock is made up of elongated pits, which may be either vesicles from volcanic outgassing or etches caused by weathering. The boundary between the edge and top of the rock exhibits topography, some of which correlates to the flute-like texture on the top surface. These depressions may have been carved by the wind, but more study of Flat Top is needed before this can be confirmed.
